Hooray for Earth Hour!

Well, the data are in. There was no measurable drop in electricity use during Earth Hour. Plus, candles cause more carbon emissions than light bulbs. Not to mention the environmental impact of glow sticks (tubes of hydrocarbon-based plastics filled with toxic chemicals). Overall, it's entirely probable that, through the use of candles and glow sticks, we actually made things worse during Earth Hour.

Now if it were somehow possible to turn off ALL the lights on earth, and get a picture of a completely dark earth, that woulda been cool.

It's not done to cause some major Environmental Benefit. It's done to remind people of an Issue. By your standard Veterans/Remembrance Day is just as pointless as it doesn't bring back the Dead.

I kind of did it. I was out for dinner for the first half of the hour so there weren't any lights on in my place. I drove home during earth our and then turned some lights on. Oh well.

Personal pet peeve: "Awareness" It seems to be the excuse people give when they try to get others to do useless things.

I do too actually. Although sometimes I get plastic anyways as they're what I use as garbage bags at home.

I find it funny that someone will go to the store and buy a bunch of plastic garbage bags, then take them home in a cloth bag.

Veterans/Remembrance Day doesn't make things worse, which Earth Hour very likely did. Burning candles and using glow sticks for Earth Hour celebrations is like throwing rocks at soldiers for Veterans Day celebrations. It goes against the whole point.

The Canadian province of Ontario, outside of Toronto, saw a decrease of 6% of electricity while Toronto saw a decrease of 15.1% (nearly doubled from 8.7% the previous year) as many businesses darkened, including the landmark CN Tower [10]

Swedish electricity operator Svenska Kraftnät recorded 2.1% decrease in power consumption from its projected figure between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. The following hour, the corresponding number was 5%.[11]

This equals the consumption of approximately half a million households out of the total 4.5 million households in Sweden.[12]

According to Vietnam Electricity Company, Vietnam electricity demand fell 140,000 kWh during Earth Hour.

In Ireland, the equivalent of 700,000 lights went off for the hour, leading to electricity consumption dropping 2 percent for the hour. Total electricity consumption dropped by about 70 megawatts during the period, resulting in a saving of 30 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This compares to the 50 megawatts saved during 2008's Earth Hour.[13]

I've actually been using one as a lunch bag for a week now. The ones I was using were two small and this holds everything

For a couple years I've been using my grocery bags as garbage bags. Yeah, it's a little ghetto. At least I'm saving a couple dollars and reusing.

Earth Hour is fine, it's always good to promote conservation. Sometimes people's good intentions backfire, but often the little things do add up.

Do the right thing, but keep a wary eye on the enviro-freak nutjobs.

I get so many god damned shopping bags I don't know what to do with them. If I used them for garbage, my garbage would always be full of shopping bags!! :laugh:

I actually used to use them as garbage bags. They generally do a decent job, but they usually have some holes so liquids become a nasty problem.
