Hooray for Earth Hour!

Well, the data are in. There was no measurable drop in electricity use during Earth Hour. Plus, candles cause more carbon emissions than light bulbs. Not to mention the environmental impact of glow sticks (tubes of hydrocarbon-based plastics filled with toxic chemicals). Overall, it's entirely probable that, through the use of candles and glow sticks, we actually made things worse during Earth Hour.

Way to go guys!

I didn't know there there was an earth hour until the day after.

Now if it were somehow possible to turn off ALL the lights on earth, and get a picture of a completely dark earth, that woulda been cool.

It's ridiculous.

Lights off for an hour and using multi-use garbage bags when we go shopping are all pathetic little efforts that don't do jack squat.

It's like calling Martin Luther King Jr's march on Washington meaningless because when it was over black's didn't immediately have equal rights. The concept is AWARENESS.

How can you be aware when you are sitting in the dark?

It's not done to cause some major Environmental Benefit. It's done to remind people of an Issue. By your standard Veterans/Remembrance Day is just as pointless as it doesn't bring back the Dead.

I like usinging those canvas shopping bags, they are less likely to break and spill everything.
Damn grocery stores are too cheap to double bag anything now.

I kind of did it. I was out for dinner for the first half of the hour so there weren't any lights on in my place. I drove home during earth our and then turned some lights on. Oh well.

Personal pet peeve: "Awareness" It seems to be the excuse people give when they try to get others to do useless things.

Cause everyone forgets about global warming 😉

I do too actually. Although sometimes I get plastic anyways as they're what I use as garbage bags at home.

I find it funny that someone will go to the store and buy a bunch of plastic garbage bags, then take them home in a cloth bag.

Veterans/Remembrance Day doesn't make things worse, which Earth Hour very likely did. Burning candles and using glow sticks for Earth Hour celebrations is like throwing rocks at soldiers for Veterans Day celebrations. It goes against the whole point.

Energy saved

The Capital city of India, Delhi's power demand fell by 1000MW. The ?phenomenal? dip is attributed to the Earth Hour observed by Delhi on Saturday evening and the rain that brought the mercury down by a few notches. [9]

The Canadian province of Ontario, outside of Toronto, saw a decrease of 6% of electricity while Toronto saw a decrease of 15.1% (nearly doubled from 8.7% the previous year) as many businesses darkened, including the landmark CN Tower [10]

Swedish electricity operator Svenska Kraftnät recorded 2.1% decrease in power consumption from its projected figure between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. The following hour, the corresponding number was 5%.[11]

This equals the consumption of approximately half a million households out of the total 4.5 million households in Sweden.[12]

According to Vietnam Electricity Company, Vietnam electricity demand fell 140,000 kWh during Earth Hour.

In Ireland, the equivalent of 700,000 lights went off for the hour, leading to electricity consumption dropping 2 percent for the hour. Total electricity consumption dropped by about 70 megawatts during the period, resulting in a saving of 30 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This compares to the 50 megawatts saved during 2008's Earth Hour.[13]

If fact checking was a requirement for creating a thread in P&N, this forum would be pretty vacant.

But yes, the OPs statement seemed off so I'm glad someone actually bothered to look it up

Wow, stupid post is stupid.

Love it, once again more proof greenies are cookies.

The Ayn Rand Institute wrote, "Participants spend an enjoyable sixty minutes in the dark, safe in the knowledge that the life-saving benefits of industrial civilization are just a light switch away... Forget one measly hour with just the lights off. How about Earth Month... Try spending a month shivering in the dark without heating, electricity, refrigeration; without power plants or generators; without any of the labor-saving, time-saving, and therefore life-saving products that industrial energy makes possible."

More Fail. It's not an experiment in Radical Ludditism. That's like saying the Minute of Silence for Mourning should be extended to some ridiculous length and implying that those who propose it are Radical Monks.

Please don't suggest using actual logic. Folks like soccerballtux are much more amusing when they're flailing around like the complete tools they are.

I've actually been using one as a lunch bag for a week now. The ones I was using were two small and this holds everything 🙂

For a couple years I've been using my grocery bags as garbage bags. Yeah, it's a little ghetto. At least I'm saving a couple dollars and reusing.

Earth Hour is fine, it's always good to promote conservation. Sometimes people's good intentions backfire, but often the little things do add up.

Do the right thing, but keep a wary eye on the enviro-freak nutjobs.

I get so many god damned shopping bags I don't know what to do with them. If I used them for garbage, my garbage would always be full of shopping bags!!

I actually used to use them as garbage bags. They generally do a decent job, but they usually have some holes so liquids become a nasty problem.

California and NY energy usage graphs. No exceptional declines, just normal late-night drop-off.

Candles and carbon.

The problems with glow sticks.

Oops, guess I did fact check.

You too???

Awareness of something that is not a proven fact and possible fiction can lead societies to behave very irrational,.... the more the agenda is pushed the more likely there is bloodshed,....

Can we push this theory as far as other theories that cause wars? Not likely, but who knows in todays day,...
