Gotta love TX & the whole deferred adjudication thing:)

I believe they'll only defer on <20 mhp over the limit though...

For where I work I got a ticket for $82 in a 65. Here's how the fine worked out:

$146 for the ticket
$30 for the "privledge" of taking traffic school
$50 (est.) for the actual traffic school.
$2 for parking (they didn't have the paperwork ready the first time, and there is no free public parking (even on the streets) within a mile of the courthouse)

The county where I got the ticket doesn't allow online traffic school, the one where I live does. (and the one where I live doesn't charge for parking)

As a side note, you can pay your fine over the phone w/ your credit card for a small convinience charge of $13

My last ticket was 8 years ago in the county I live in, the process seemed to be much more of a "we want you to slow down" where as the current one is "we just want you to give us the cash and go away". I guess that's the difference between El Dorado County and Sacramento County. Sac has the beurocrats.

edit: added parking mini-rant

I have been driving for 22 years and have never gotton a speeding ticket once.
Why ?

I never travel ten MPH over the limit.

Permint for speeding... that's how I look at it.

Fortunately, I've managed to sneak through and not pay for my yearly speeding permit. I've been doing 95 mph a lot on I-35, where most cars do about 80-85 and the speed limit is 70 day / 65 night.

If you get pulled over in Virginia and you're doing over 80mph, expect to pay over $300.

In New York, 5mph over is $75. Hate to see what more than that is. :(

I've gotten tagged twice. Once it was 70 in a 65 and he gave me a warning...that was a state cop. Then i got tagged doing 41 in a 35 (they had just dropped it down that morning from 45) going downhill and while I was riding my breaks. Sigh...that one was 100 bucks.

WV cops, especially city cops in some of these small towns, live and die by speed traps. Its the only funding they have.

The only way that will cost over $300.00 in Virginia is if you are charged with reckless driving. Other than that 80 in a 55 is $172.00 total fine plus processing (court costs). Link to menu of fines here.

80 in a 55 = $149!

Just went to court on Friday. Neither the judge nor the trooper showed up. During his recess a judge from across the hall came over and dismissed the ticket. Whoopee!

The way I see it, speeding tickets are strictly a source of revenue for cities/counties/policedepartments. If the local government was truly concerned about the issue then they would have 0 tolerance and pull over -every- vehicle that was speeding a mile over the posted speed limit. If this happened people would quickly learn to obey the speed limits. Instead, speeding is permitted. In fact, it is encouraged in most places as the posted speed limits are unreasonable to permit traffic flow. Police officers themselves regularly travel above the speed limit, regardless if they are on a 'call' or not.

Several years ago a 'anti-speed limit' group in Dallas drove around 635 (the loop that runs around the city) during rush hour, side by side, at exactly the speed limit. They caused a THREE HOUR traffic backup. So before anyone gets on a soapbox about 'the law's the law', find a more worthy cause.

Hehe....you'd have to be doing at least 100mph to get singled out in traffic here in Atlanta. 80mph is pretty much the "minimum" on the highways unless traffic is light or there's a traffic jam. The'll "crack down" for a day or so once in a while to show that they're "getting tough on speeding".....so everyone slows down for about a day and then it goes right back to the Indy 500 pace as soon as "Operation Generate Revenue" is over.

The funny thing I noticed when looking up the fines in Virginia for my other post in this thread is that they passed a law that kicked in last July to raise the fine by $2.00 per mile over the limit for highways posted 55 and 65 ie interstates where most people are likely to speed with the least safety risk. So much for the "it's all about safety" theory. If it was really about safety then the steepest fines would be for speeding in residential areas, not interstates.

I only have one ticket, 72 in a 55. Paid $7x to the clerk after having the fine adjusted due to my clean record. Never bothered to talk to the judge.

Ticket drops off in 15 months.

I got a ticket doing 83 in a 65. Ticket was 80 and there were 50 dollars in court fees right off the bat.

I got it "amended" to a parking ticket. How do you do that? Pay double the fine and they "amend" it. So my fine was 260 bucks.

Seems like Insurance Fraud to me...

My home to my work: about 20 miles.
driving avg speed of 70mph = it takes me about 30 mins to get home

driving avg speed of 90mph = it takes me about 28 mins to get home

not worth it at all for that 2 mins.

uh.. 70mph would take about 17 min. to get home, and 90 mph would take about 13 min...

mph X time = miles
time = miles/mph = miles/mph x 60 min/hr

That theory would only work if your start and stop points are at each end of the highway you are doing 70 or 90 on. Add in off and on ramps, traffic lights, stop signs, and neighborhood streets and you probably end up with his net result.

don't ever speed in Virginia...a co-worker of mine just got a wreckless driving ticket there for going 84 in a 65. One more mile and the judge would've tried to throw him in jail! Buncha speeding nazis over there.

Its also illegal to have radar detector there. They must really not paid those cops enough, so they have to result to get money in any given way.

Actually it is illegal to operate one per a Supreme Court decision back in the 1980's if I recall correctly. This means the police need to prove you were operating it before ticketing you. They have many clever ways of figuring that out including the surprisingly low tech method of hitting your car with the radar beam from behind and watching for the brake lights.

I'm back. RESULTS? Mixed bag....semi-good and semi-bad.

The Good: I overestimated my fine. It was "only" $160, not $170 :)

The Bad: The probation period is 90 days, not 60..been awhile since I got nailed. :(

Courthouse doesn't open until 0800. I got there at 0710 and there were 5 people ahead of me, waiting in line by the front door.

Once it opened, I was in and out in 30 minutes...and $160 poorer. Oh well. Now I get to do the speed limit for 90 days! Oh, the humility!!!!:Q
