Honor student beaten to a pulp by police

Apparently you don't either.

I understand it just fine. You don't beat the shit out somebody for being black, and carrying a soda. Wearing a badge doesn't give you that authority. If you think it does, I'd be more comfortable if you found a career doing something else....

Care to enlighten us?

Prosecution has to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Defense wants to create reasonable doubt - they don't have to prove innocence beyond a reasonable doubt.

That has no bearing on the 'innocent until proven guilty' rant you like to go on.

I'm pretty sure the allure of being a LEO _is_ having authority. Whether its just or not, well that's for the LEO to uphold. *shrug*

Some of us are good people trying to do good stuff.

If you can't think of any reason someone would want to be in law enforcement other than having authority, well.., I'm glad you aren't in it. 😉

Bullshit, you don't beat up a fuckin' 5'6" cello player because you don't like the way he looks. I guess it's alright for cops to go out queer bashing too, eh? I'm sure they're guilty of something. They will be after the report's filed anyway :^S

I think he was referring how the officers involved assumed him guilty of some crime by looking "suspicious"

A small black teen walking on the sidewalk "suspicious" to three white men... Doesn't sound like there might be a hint of racial profiling there?

"sprinkle some crack on him and lets get outta here"

That's not what I said.

Our job is to be suspicious. You all know very well how "accurate" (where's that sarcasm mark..) initial news reports are. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't - I don't know! However, to tell me that I have to assume everyone I deal with is innocent...if you think about that, how am I supposed to do my job?

I am not taking a position on this one way or the other, so don't start misquoting me and making assumptions, either.

I don't get what the last line means. You're glad I'm not a cop because I am cynical not a single cop considered power and authority in making their career decision, even a small % of the time? I'm not saying all cops do, but I'm just saying don't discount it as a factor either.

The way I read this:

is that you can't think of any reason someone would want to be an officer other than that of having authority. I'm sure some do, but all? No.

Your job is to be suspicious, huh? A lot of money can be made from your suspicion of others on your behalf. I'll remember that the next time I am around police officers.

The other reason is to beat the shit out of people of a different color.

I'm not implying you need to assume everyone you deal with as an officer to be illegal, but you have to draw a line somewhere. They had no reason at all to be suspicious of the kid until he ran. They should never have felt a need to stop and get out of the car.

We should be able to walk down the street without being approached by police unnecessarily

Is this a serious post?

Of course it is. Back in the 1990s a cop-killer was found not guilty after a career criminal successfully used 'black rage' as a defense. If I remember correctly, he was able to get compensated as well. If police keep shit like this up, basketball and football won't be the only meal-tickets out of the ghetto.

Nobody knows either way. Vague article is vague. 😛

Please tell me how I am supposed to catch criminals while assuming each and every person I deal with is entirely innocent.

Should I stop this car for speed? Nope, he must have a medical emergency justifying that. Should I run this guy for warrants? Nope, he can't have any because he's innocent.

C'mon.

Agree OP needs to update with the MSNBC story. More detail:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35012543/ns/us_news/

What is very troubling is that the Miles is saying he didn't even have a Mountain Dew to begin with. That said, no witnesses and with the cops saying one thing and Miles saying something else, it may be a while before we here something that is corroborated by evidence.

You think they'd leave out the part where someone fitting his description had just robbed a convenience store, or how he was toking up on the corner, or threw some gang signs as the car passed?

:\

Jlee, believe me I understand that cops get accused of shit that just didn't happen, or didn't happen the way it was said, but I think you're giving more "benefit of the doubt" than the situation is warranted given the information that we have

No, but you also shouldn't stop a car following all traffic laws cause he has big chrome rims and a billet grille either, which I think would be a more fitting analogy

I'm not giving anyone anything.

Well, blacks are getting profiled. Poor people are profiled. The police also abuse their authority with them. My parents live in the apartment building across the street from where Bill Gates has his own in Manhattan. There are some crazy people in this building but the cops are scared shit to enter the building when they are called. They also make sure to come in unmarked cars whenever there is an incident and it is usually veterans, not younger uniformed police. If it was Harlem, the police would probably come 30-deep with marked cars and guns blazing. Different people are treated differently...

Maybe it's just me.., but I don't see how that's relevant to my post at all.
