I go to Marine Corps OCS this summer (Most likely)

Today at work my girlfriend tells a group of coworkers before her meeting that I am joining the Marine Corps. The first thing that comes out of this guy mouth was, "He's probably going to ship off to Iraq, probably going to get shot there"

WHAT THE HELL!

Then she goes, "He has a lower chance of being shipped over, he wants a MOS in the IS field"
He says "IT you mean? Either way he's going to be a soldier and he's going to be fighting terrorist"

What the hell is wrong with people? She's already freaking the shit out...

No matter how hard you try you'll never be able to escape stupid people.

Not to worry, let her realize the truth of the situation now while she still has the opportunity to leave. If she stays with you now after this realization, then she will be strong later when you do get deployed away for a year or more. She may be better prepared because of this and less likely to divorce you while you are gone.

Sorry, bitter truth due to experience. Divorce and marital infidelity is very common in military relationships. This may help her to be stronger later should she decide to toughen up to reality and stay with you.

He may be a dick, but he's technically correct. The Marines train you as a soldier first, everything else second. Not sure how the officer corps go, not a big fan of officers. Idiots generally, until they get some leaves on their collars or are prior enlisted.

Lower chance does not mean no chance. He may be a dick for pointing it out, but she needs to be aware that there is a definite possibility of it happening. Take this as an opportunity to find out how she feels about your risking your life.

I fucking might
Meet him once and he was trying to convince me that his XTI and a 75 - 300 is better than my 30d with a Canon 100 - 400 L @300mm...

YOU FUCKING BABY-KILLING BASTARD!!!

Oh wait....that's what they called us when we came home from Vietnam...:p

As a former grunt, I don't have much use for officers of any kind, but Marine officers MIGHT be a step above the rest...
I had the opportunity to serve under a few who were indeed "a few good men" and I was proud to serve under their commands...however, most were worthless fuckwads who deserved the occasional frag grenade in their tents.

Be smart. Learn to listen to your NCO's...they're usually far smarter and field-wise than you'll ever be. You may be their boss, but the Gunny's and above run the Corps...

People are idiots when it comes to knowing the right thing to say. That's why they used to write manners books. Too bad nobody reads them anymore. It'd help close the "I'm an obvious idiot" gap for people like you're gf's coworker.

Or she'll sleep around the whole time he's deployed... Growing up right next to the largest army base in the US, aside from the few years the big red one wasn't stationed there, you learn these things. It's actually one of the main reasons I wouldn't join.

There are faithful women in this world, you know...though i suppose it has more to do with how the're treated.

Military spouses lead a tough life, though I know a number who've lasted. Including a couple who were married in tech school who are still married.

I know, but seeing how often it happens it's simply amazing. Especially when their husbands get back and they act like nothing happened and they waited around for them to get back. I know it's not ALL of them but a good majority do. I've been friends with a few that simply adored their wives treated them very good imo and it still happened. Some of them felt bad and whatever but most of them acted like there was nothing wrong with it. My Ex who's supposedly getting married to a soldier when he gets back from Afghanistan is cheating on him and he's been gone less than a month. She runs off and says this and that about missing him and being so happy to hear from him then fucks anything that walks right afterwards. I know he's a good guy and treats her good, I dislike her but thats a different story... and I plan on letting him know what she's been doing when he gets back, I doubt he'll believe me because most of them don't.

Well to be fair this happens just as much in non-military relationships. Cheaters will cheat, eventually.
