Its all for naught. Because in about 4 months or so a federal ban on same sex marriages will be passed. And it will survive a challenge and be enforced by the supreme court.
That's a shame. But the movement for same-sex marriages was one of the most blundering, poorly executed political agendas in US history. They seriously fscked up by trying to go ram a controversial agenda down everyone's throats. They took something that could have been accepted (what right does the federal government have to dictate marriage anyway?) if introduced slowly and properly and instead tried to force the issue and made it very very unpopular.
I blame them for GW's re-election.
Case in point: Multnomah county, Oregon commission chair Diane Linn, who won her last re-election 4 years ago in a landslide, and who passed -- behind closed doors no less -- an edict forcing gay marriage (briefly) here in Oregon, was just voted out of office this Tuesday by a huge landslide margin (she got only 22% of the votes in a 2-way race). Exit polls claimed that the gay marriage issue was the primary reason she got voted out.
And this is Multnomah county, Oregon (Portland). It's massively liberal Democratic party stronghold. We voted like 75% for Kerry in 2004.
