Homeschooling rocks!

Two points,
1) Yes home schooled children do tend to perform better on standardized tests when compared to the general population however this does not mean there is anything inherently better about home schooling. Home schooled children tend to skew toward the upper middle class and more importantly the parents have shown that they care greatly about their child's education, to make a proper comparison you need to compare home schooled students to the similar population of public school students and not public school students as a whole because otherwise you have a number of important other variables that must be taken into account.
2) I know a number of home schooled students because a number of them play on my high school's teams and generally they are everything that people have already said, nice, well behaved, committed (In cross country one guy fractured his legs in 3 places about halfway through the race and still finished the race) however they also tend to be very shy and/or socially awkward. I can't say that this is the result of the home schooling however this is a trend I have noticed.

Why is home schooling still legal? You should have to get some kind of licence to screw your kids up like that.

We home school, got an issue with it?

There is nothing wrong with home schooling, provided the parents/teachers are qualified. Just from what I've personally seen, most parents aren't qualified to have any children, let alone teach children.

The reasons behind homeschooling should be justified as well. Religion is not a good reason to home school your kids. "Sheltering from the real world" is not a good reason to home school your kids. "Terrible teachers / materials / curriculum in the local public schools" is a good reason to home school.

And the sociopaths that kids have to deal with at school are not damaging?

They will have to deal with sociopaths eventually (in real life outside of their parents domicile). It is MUCH MUCH better for them to learn how to deal with / avoid these types of people EARLY ON in life, vs. being sheltered from them until college, and not knowing how to deal with / avoid them.

i watched a program once, about an american family. all the sons and daughters where homeschooled, they were quite religious and punishments were carried out with somekind of cane-like tree branch from a tree in their garden. to be honest it all looked like they were really good parents until i found out that they were homeschooled of course.

it probably wouldnt of been so bad but when the schooling consisted of mostly learning things like family values, stuff from the bible and other mundane things i was like wtf?. no maths? english? history? science?

ok their kids will grow up with a great respect for society, be well behaved, nice people....but the fruits of this homeschooled labour amounted to nothing more than the eldest daughter having a full time job as a cleaner because she basically had nothing to prove her education, no real maths skills beyond basic add/subtract nothing. she, and her younger siblings are destined to work bottom of the barrel jobs forever. but at least they have family values.

obviously the parents had good intentions, didnt want their angels being corrupted at a state school or whatever but you cant help think that it is such a waste of an oppertunity. Most parents want their child to do better than them, not make the same mistakes, carve out a rich future. these two seemed to want to keep the kids below them.

homeschooling wouldnt be bad if there were like regulations on what had to be taught and some kind of system to examin or test pupils to prove that they had learnt something. teaching family values and some bollocks from the bible and then having nothing to show for it is, in my view, the parents screwing the kids.

That seems strange on a few levels. First, this parent seems pretty dumb from the numerous spelling errors. Secondly if the kid is home schooled, then she herself is the teacher. If that is so, why did she give her daughter an assignment and then go post on craigslist something that amounts to doing all the work herself.

Unless there's something I am missing...

Nope, that pretty much sums it up. Reason #2934 why homeschooling is, by in large, a really bad idea.

uh, "by in large"?

you weren't home schooled by any chance, were you?

which brings up something I've always wondered...why do people so often confuse "then" with "than?"

I don't think most people know that "than" even exists. They may see it used a couple times here and there, but for the most part, it sounds kinda like "then", so they just use that.

I mean, to me it's just:

than - "comparative word." "Public schools are better than being home schooled."
then - logical word (expresses logical chain of events). "If he does that, then you better do that too!"

Then is also sometimes omitted oddly enough, but being a programmer or someone who follows logic, it tends to be a bit natural to use it.

I don't think you should have capitalized internet.

This is debatable and it seems most North American establishments capitalize the word.

Looks more like petty theft items at a crack house, smells like some sort of scam.

If not, I feel really sorry for that kid.

By and large.

Sorry, but I hate when people screw up idioms, and since this thread is all about making fun of someone's errors in an Internet posting I figured it was appropriate. 😉

I don't think you should have capitalized internet.

It is proper to capitalize Internet.

Almost all of your arguments are ignorant of homeschooling, unprovable, or anecdotal. I really can't spend all day picking them apart so I picked just the one most commonly used.

Yes, home schoolers often don't do well in the following situations:

1) The local drug dealer is pushing a new type of the drug of the day...
2) The local gang-banger is threatening you for your lunch money
3) Watching a student knife another student
4) Joining in the attempts to completely disrupt a class/break a teachers will.
5) Know the ins and outs of ditching class
6) Avoiding racial brawls
etc. etc.,

lots of those skills I learned in public schools. I have found that they really don't help me much, in the "real life".

Most homeschoolers participate in co-ops that provide plenty of socialization.

I will sum it up with one thing. We live in a (supposedly) free country, and anyone who is trying to force kids to go to a public school/control how home schooling is performed is essentially, and I hate to use the word but it fits, a communist.

Time to move your ass out of the ghetto...
But I'm guessing you're a actually an older white male, living in the sticks and that's your idea of a public high school... great talking point and all, but it couldn't be farther from truth.

I went to a huge public high school in suburban Detroit and I've never seen anything even remotely like that. There's not even a highschool with metal detectors in 30 mile radius

I went to a medium sized public school in the midwest, medium sized city nestled in the cornfields, late 1980's. Probably 75% white/20% black/5% Hispanic. There were no metal detectors at the time. Two students were convicted of murder while I was there. If you like, I'll PM you their names and you can verify it.

I actually was only threatened for lunch money in junior high school, once I broke 6' tall that stopped. "Salt and Pepper" is what it was called when the race fights would happen.

I'm sure you would have been perfectly willing to go to public school IN Detroit instead of your lily white rich suburb since obviously all public schools were just like yours?

WOW... The use of 'tword' (toward) just blew me away.

I find it weird when people use "towards" instead of "toward." A bit of a googly search just now said that "towards" is more common in the UK where we use "toward," but I know I've heard and read a lot of Americans using "towards."

I seriously think it's less about the dangers of public schools and more about extending babying children more.

Going to school is the time where students are in a controlled environment allowing them to make their own decisions without mom and dad coaching them.

It also opens up the 2pm to 5pm time slot where they are alone usually....I think that is what parents fear esp religious ones. What if little Jane discovers the taste of penis one day?

Based on the adults I have met teaching these homeschoolers, their educations are very lacking. My first wife was a baptist and almost everyone we knew around that either went to private christian schools or were home schooled.

Alot of them required their kids to be home schooled and as a perk allowed them to attend a private high school. That seemed common.

As a percentage though more of the girls from that school were non-virgins than my large public high school (none of the girl seniors were virgins and only 2 of the juniors out of about 40 girls....the funny part is most of the guys were virgins there and tended to obey their parents more).

Home schooling can work and public school can fail, however; look around you at the adults you witness and think about even an average number of them trying to teach things to someone else.

Seriously, with teh barrage of anecdotes again. Between my wife and myself we have 2 bachelors and 3 master's degrees. There are several PHD's and college professors in our co-op. Therefore, my anecdotes win!

it has its good sides you know. I graduated at 17 and had my A.S by 19. and now Im married at 20.

But you can't capitalize or use punctuation on an internet forum, therefore it was a failure 🙂

Did you go all the way through high school?

Wow - that's pretty young to get married. Maybe I need to rethink this 😀

Fixed that a bit 😉 in all fairness though it's your grammar that was off...I rarely capitalize. Also I post in stream of consciousness style so my punctuation and the like are in that form.

I don't know how being married is a plus to home schooling though....looks like you just met the first girl as a free man you could and hitched up to public schooled people.

what about all the really bad teachers that screw up the kids life?

I know a few families that are home schooled. they are far ahead of most kids in math, reading, science, and English. the kids are polite, well behaved and smart. they also go year around.

granted i also know one kid that is home schooled and is far behind most.

so i guess its just like sending kids to public school.

Except they have no social skills, at all, and they probably don't/wont do very smart things out there in the real world. Especially if they live in a large city (LA, NY).

9 times out of 10 'street smarts' will keep you safer and out of trouble, versus having a high SAT score.

Those who have high SAT scores are usually smart enough to figure out how to have common sense, at least in my experience. It's the dumb kids that do crazy things for whoever knows what reason and they feel the repercussions for it.
