So I'm poking around CL looking for some bookshelves for my daughter - just keep clicking when I run into this...

Is this like the crazy person not knowing they're crazy? Does she think she's a qualified teacher for her kid?

That seems strange on a few levels. First, this parent seems pretty dumb from the numerous spelling errors. Secondly if the kid is home schooled, then she herself is the teacher. If that is so, why did she give her daughter an assignment and then go post on craigslist something that amounts to doing all the work herself.

Unless there's something I am missing...

Why is home schooling still legal? You should have to get some kind of licence to screw your kids up like that.

Nope, that pretty much sums it up. Reason #2934 why homeschooling is, by in large, a really bad idea.

Except those aren't typos. A typo is a slip on the keyboard - that woman's unable to correctly spell every tenth word in her post - and she clearly believes she's qualified to home school her children.

Don't get me wrong - I'm all for teaching your kids your own values and and creative thinking and all that. I know public schooling isn't great in many areas. I just think, if she's as borderline illiterate as her post suggests, she's not doing her kid any favors, and certainly not preparing him/her for life beyond their front door.

Kudos to her for trying to do something charitable - and more kudos for teaching her kid that mentality. I think she's got bigger fish that need frying at the moment.

I really don't see the difference. Either that lady is going to screw up the kid, or the public school system will.

what about all the really bad teachers that screw up the kids life?

I know a few families that are home schooled. they are far ahead of most kids in math, reading, science, and English. the kids are polite, well behaved and smart. they also go year around.

granted i also know one kid that is home schooled and is far behind most.

so i guess its just like sending kids to public school.

I do, if you're as (il)literate as the woman I posted about.

Since you're a mod, I'll assume you're able to construct coherent sentences chock-full of correctly spelled words. I'll also assume you're passing on those valuable traits to your children, properly equipping them for life beyond your shelter. If those assumptions are valid, I've got no problem with you home schooling your kids.

Home education allows the parents to tailor the curriculum / pace to the individual student. In public schools, the vast majority of kids are treated the same, regardless of their different learning styles, etc. Not everyone learns the same way & at the same rate, but in a public school classroom, they're expected to.

If you're under the impression that most high school graduates are able to construct coherent sentences chock-full of correctly spelled words, you might be surprised. I've seen some pretty scary writing in college classes...definitely not impressive...

In all the different forums I've been in and in all the different emails I've read, I've seen crap like this frequently from educated people...even at my current job with nothing but people with Bachelor's degrees, Master's degrees and making 60k-200k a year.

There is something about getting on a computer and typing that results in misspellings and grammar errors that make seemingly educated look incredibly stupid. I do it often myself and have done so here on Anandtech. So, without knowing anything about this lady, I'm willing to give her a pass.

Well, my wife can :)

That part I can help with....

yeap.

I know 2 kids that got lost in the shuffle of public schools. one needed extra time to understand the information. he was not stupid just slow. only good part is (after a nasty divorce) the mother started homeschooling him. It did wonders for him. he graduated high school and even have some college education. Which is far better then he would have done continuing in public school. sure he would have got a high school diploma (they hand them out like candy to special ed kids). but he would have been ill equipped to handle the real world.

the family across the street are home schooled. they have "classes" year around. out of 6 of the kids 5 are far higher then kids there age. the one that is behind has a learning disability. while slightly behind he is not that far.

while i wouldn't home school if people do it well its great.

I had a roommate in college that was home-schooled. He was a very hard-working person. He ended up with a 4.0 double engineering major. I am not sure why his parents chose home schooling but I would guess religion. Nonetheless, his entire family are incredibly nice and generous people. All of them are really bright and successful. Unfortunately, they are the only home schooled people I know.

How has it been for you? Do you worry about socialization or advanced topics as your child(ren) get older? Based on many of the teachers I have met as an adult and my own experiences as a student, I would be inclined to think home schooling might be an excellent opportunity for your children to advance intellectually at an accelerated pace.

Bingo. If you're unhappy with your public school, your options are:
1) Move
2) Private School
3) Home School

The public school my son should be going to is loaded with illegal immigrant kids who mostly speak Spanish. Because of this, other kids get dragged down. We're also unhappy with Georgia schools in general and with the curriculum of teaching to the NCLB tests.

Because of this, my wife and I have made the sacrifice to pay the tuition to a private school.
