When you don’t value education diplomas become a roadblock or a commodity that you can buy or sell to get to the next roadblock. The same can be said for the many paper certifications that are out there, like you find in the IT field, real estate, beauty schools etc.

It’s no longer about learning or teaching, it’s about making money, you are either trying to get people’s money or you are trying to get a job to get more money.

Same with bartending school degrees and truck driving degrees.

Not every certificate gets a good stable job!
 
The biggest problem with homeschooling is it allows abusive households to pull their children out of the only monitoring system around, the public school system.

Want to have babies with your 12 year old because god told you so? Home school.

Seriously, I am fully aware of CDL specific jobs. Unlike Bartenders, CDL's are at least required to do those specific jobs across all states.

However,I was under the impression that truck driving school taught you how to drive the truck, as well as safety and laws of the road. But after talking to a buddy of mine who was required to take truck driving school for his job, I have learned they basically only teach you the basics and what you need to know to pass the test.

Who would have thought that a state that is ran by people who don't value education and hate those college elites (all while probably attending Ivy League schools themselves) would want low education voters they can control.
 
Nothing wrong with homeschooling, a lot of people are homeschooled. It takes a two-parent or a single parent household with a decent job to have the energy to teach your child education skills needed for society.

Sure, it CAN work out well, but most of the people I've known who were homeschooled found it an overall detriment.

Exactly, children on average are at a disadvantage enough in life to begin with, let’s make it harder for them just to save them from that evil liberal school system indoctrination.

Who do you know that is a notable person that was homeschooled? Everyone I know who was homeschooled kind of turned out as a loser or a downer to be honest.

It's actually extremely hard to find nonbiased data on homeschooling outcomes. Doesn't seem like a lot of people are studying it. This is one of the best I can find. I couldn't find anything on like lifetime earnings or likelihood of completing college. There's biased stuff on Sat scores and etc but that's testing a self selective group and not across the board. Like I said, very poorly studied as is common in the sociological sciences

When it comes time to take the geology portion of the standards test how does the homeschooler answer the question, The age of the Earth is approximately….

Not everyone is a dunderhead. I'm Christian and I know that's it's the latter, approximately.

Yes, but a large portion of Christian’s don’t, the world is 10k years old, dinosaur bones were implanted in the earth to test our faith, adaptation could never become evolution because the earth is so young, blah blah on and on. This was my education and a big reason why I support standardized education testing. I spent 7th grade isolated as a home schooler, and 8-12 in a very small Christian school. This school folded almost immediately when MA instituted testing standards.

So sorry for your negative experience. To be clear, I am not a big supporter of the homeschooling trend. Some parents have been successful at doing this in our parish, but they must pass state standards via testing and have made use of tutoring for specialist knowledge such as my wife; who is a Master's degreed reading specialist. - on their own dime of course.

I am a champion, of sorts, of a classical Catholic education. One that involves excellence in academics as well as an excellent formation program for their faith (the two go hand in hand of course). There is much to be done in that area where to momentum to adopt better science based methods of teaching is failing the students. The resistance seems to be mainly a lack of awareness and leadership. My wife and I would like to get involved in improving this, God willing.

Having been through 12 years of Catholic school, my opinion is any academic benefits are a function of being a private school - just like any other private school - rather than being a religious school. If anything, the religious aspect is a hindrance IMO, because there isn't going to be any good discussion of topics like sexual and public health beyond "wait till marriage" And of course we were taught abortion is bad. I'm pretty sure every girl in my class wanted to flip desks, while us boys at the time were completely ignorant of the topic because it didn't seem to concern us.

My one religion teacher, who was the exception rather than the norm, did try to teach us something about social justice. I wish he could have explored the topic so much more, and without the confines of Catholicism.
