I'd take a look at your manual, is there some kind of on screen guide that you can pull up?

EDIT - I brought your receivers specs online and it says that the optical audio inputs are assignable, so there has to be a way to assign them or unassign them. If none of this works, there is an easier way, just plug the DVD player into the VCR inputs on your receiver instead of the DVD inputs, and then see if the sound works. If that doesnt work, then there is something wrong with the way your speakers are connected.

You're going to be looking for something that gives you the option of assigning the Optical Digital input, Coaxial digital input, or the RCA analog input to the DVD function.

i know i am able to use this option of chosing coax or optical or RCA because it is metioned in the manuel but i cannot find out how to take advantage of this option anywhere? would this be an option on screen or would it perhaps be a switch on the back of the redciever?

You know I was just thinking, you could disconnect the Red/White RCA cables from your DVD to your receiver and use one of those cables to connect the coax output on your dvd player to the coax input on your receiver and then assign it to the dvd function. I would think that the option to assign the digital inputs would be in an on screen menu, but it could be a switch on the back of your receiver, but i doubt it. What did the manual say about those assignable inputs?

Hmm, in looking at your receiver specs, I noticed there is a Test Tone mode, have you tried this out yet to make sure your speakers are working correctly?

OK MAN I GOT IT!!! but i only get audio on the front 2 speakers! no audio on rears or central nor sub. On the front of the reciever it only has two speakers selected, but also when i try switching to 6 channel it dosnt work anymore?? also it only works when i select DVD and that auto selects only the front 2 speakers?

yes when i tested them they all worked

also i just noticed the woofer is also working right now as well as the two fronts

EDIT- it said when u tested them u should hear a tone and then it goes to front right then back right etc etc and then u hear the tone, i heard the tone for them all, u cannot do this while watching a DVD i tried, but now while im watching a DVD the fronts work as well as woofer but the central and two rears do not

Ok, first things first, use the Test Tone mode to make sure all your speakers are set up right. Second, in order to get Dolby Digital surround sound, you will need to disconnect the RCA cables for the audio (red and white) like i posted earlier and use the coax connection.

Check the DSP mode that your receiver is currently in, mostly likely its in stereo, instead of Dolby Digital (which you can only use if you use the coax connection). If you are gonna use the RCA analog connection, then you'll have to set it to Dolby Pro Logic.

Actually, Dolby Pro-Logic will use all your speakers, and it can use a normal analog RCA connection, which is what you are currently using. The difference between DPL and Dolby Digital is that Dolby Digital sounds better because the signal transmission is digital and the surround speakers are in stereo instead of mono.

So if you want to hear Dolby Digital sound, you'll need to use the digital connection (which you should be able to use right now if you use a regular RCA connection to connect the coax output of your DVD player to the coax input on your receiver). Other wise the best sound you'll be able to get is Dolby Pro Logic. Have you checked the DSP mode that your receiver is currently on yet?>

ok there is this little circular knob on the front of my reciever, this is where my manual said to go, there are three options for it "Optical" , "Coaxical" and "Analog"

if i set it to Optical or Coaxical then no sound at all, if i go to analog then i get the speakers i listed previously

Press the Surround button on your remote, that should bring up the DSP modes and you should be able to select Dolby Pro Logic which will get all your speakers working. Like I said before, if you want to get Dolby Digital, you'll need to hook up your DVD player using the coax inputs/outputs and turn the knob on the front of your reciever to coaxial and then turn the DSP mode to Dolby Digital.

Well you'll need a couple of things to take advantage of your setup. Here's a small list.

2 Sets of S-Video (one for your dvd to receiver, one for your receiver to tv)
Coaxial cable or Toslink (fiber optic) cable to connect from your DVD to receiver
RCA cables for your VCR

If you use the S-Video cables you'll get a better picture. You could then ditch the RCA cables that you are currently using and use them for the VCR instead of buying another set.

Ok today i got 2 sets of S-Video cables and i hooked one from the DVD to the Reciever and the other from the Reciever to the TV. I also bought a Digital Optical Cable today and hooked it from the DVD to the reciever. Then i hooked my leftover RCA cable from the VCR to the reciever. Ok now i get a DVD picture and sound but the only way i get sound from all the speakers is when i have, Dolby Digital and Dolby Logic running. When i click 6 channel i get now sound at all. I dont get that loud of sound from my speakers ither when there suppose to be LOUD? Also when im just watching normal TV i cant get any sound from anywhere but the TV?? any other ideas now??

Well you should check the settings on your receiver for your speakers, they should be set to small, if they are already set to small, try setting them to large and see if that affects how your system sounds.

In order to run your TV through your speaker system, your TV needs to have a set of audio out RCA connections which you should run to your receiver. If your TV doesnt have this then you wont be able to listen to your TV broadcast through your receiver.

Another thing, you're only going to get sound coming out of all your speakers when you are watching something that has a Dolby Digital or Pro Logic soundtrack (dvds, vhs movies). Normal CDs are recorded in stereo, you might be able to fiddle with the different DSP modes to see if they have a surround mode that lets you listen to normal music through all your speakers. The 6 Channel option is for the 5.1 input you have on the back of your VCR, it would allow you to connect a DVD Audio player or some similar device to your receiver if you get one if the future, it has no use right now.

benwhatever, your statements about DD and Dolby Pro Logic are flawed. Also, I would advise the guy with the RCA system to RTFM!
He is one of the reasons Home Theater systems becoming more and more
compromised these days. He should hire someone professional to install
his setup.

Well, I hope he finds entertainment with his setup, but I kind of doubt he will ever know the true potential of Home Theater Entertainment...

Thanks for your constructive comments. I'm tryin to help someone set up their system. What help are you bringing to this topic? You dont like what i have to say or think its wrong then spell it out or go away. I'm open to hear what you have to say, but looking at your post, you didnt say anything.

Sure you just have to use one of the free inputs on your receiver. The easiest one to use are the ones on the front of your receiver, usually they are designated as Auxillary inputs, just plug your system into those and set your receiver to AUX or whatever the input is labeled and you should be good to go.

LeStEr, keep in mind that using the front av input, although is ideal for video games, it's not optimal. the reason being is that most receiver with front av input has this port set with higher resitance (greater ohms), therefore it's very restrictive to sound input level, resulting in lower sound volume and degraded sound quality. although most average people won't even notice it. perhaps i'm just being picky, but i can't help it since i'm a home theatre junkie. :) good luck!
