Home theater receivers under 300 ****UPDATED****

The Onkyo 575 rcvr has proprietary amplifiers for each of the 5.1 channels...a BIG plus over the sony 945. I costs about the same as the 945, and the online retailers already mentioned in this thread sell the same recver. I was set on a sony 945 because of the bells/whistles and the higher power, but have become convinced that the onkyo is a better deal.

The power issue? I really doubt you are going to be able to tell the difference between 100 watts/channel and 80 wpc. If you want bragging rights, just tell people that you have a "480 Watt Rcvr." Some dealers advertise recvrs that way--80 watts x 6 channels = 480 watts.
 
I just want something nice that I wont have to upgrade to quickly, Im not worried about what anyone else thinks.
 
Skywhr - I was in your same boat recently and found the Technics SA-DX940. It has been fantastic so far - Dolby Digital AND DTS decoding built in, 3 Digital Optical inputs (no digital coax if you needed that, though).

Sounds great - MSRP of $299, but can be found cheaper.


/edit - no Svideo also... hard to find under $300, but I haven't needed them, as I'm using an Svideo switcher seperatly.

Great choice on the receiver. They are certainly a step above the DE series, and built much better. Beefier power supply etc. Happy listening. 🙂
 
I'll second the SONY DB840.

I've had the DB830 for about a year and have not regreted the purchase for one second. Much better than the DE series. Great value!
 
Seems to rate fairly well, check it out here. Make sure to run it hard through it's paces for the next couple weeks and write down all the things you like and dislike about it, then compare your findings and see if it meets up with what you require in a receiver.

On a side note, if for some reason the Sony isn't to your liking, you might want to check out the Yamaha HTR-5240 and HTR-5250 models. I've had a chance to play with them quite a bit over the last couple weeks (I'm shopping for a new receiver too, for my secondary system) and they absolutely rock when it comes to sound quality and power... especially for the $$$ (the HTR-5240 can be had for $299 and the 5250 for $399) my only gripe is that their remotes suck. But, what the hell, that's what you buy a universal remote for. 🙂

Edit: Yeah, $400 is pretty good for the Sony. You can find it a bit cheaper online (maybe $350). Did you buy it from a B&M for $400? If you did, then that's an excellent price.
 
moreaudiovideo.com had it for $349 a couple days ago, but it seems to be back up to $389 now. They run sales on Sony about once a month.
 
It will be here today, supposedly...I will tinker with it when I get home. I went to a friends house last night who has the strde501 and that system was nice so Im sure I will love my receiver...
