I was looking @ the JVC RX-8000VBK Home Theater Receiver and was wondering if anyone had an opinion on it, I also like the Sony STRDE845 or Sony STRDE945 but they have less connections than the JVC. I would like to spend less than $300 on a receiver. Any suggestions? I am fully aware that there are much nicer brands out there such as Harmon Kardon and Onkyo but they are much moe expensive for less options. The JVC above has Discrete amps just like the Onkyo. I would like to get a SONY, KENWOOD, or JVC to keep within my range of price. Onkyo would be nice though...

Check reviews at AudioReview. Also, Aren't those two Sonys above $300? I wasn't able to find the 845 for under $300, unless you have connections or something. It also depends on what you need/want for your system. :)

Ah, just did a search on mysimon.com and came up with the Sony 845 for $282.

It also seems to have a good rating at AudioReviews.

I'm a firm believer that if you pick something like an Onkyo you will ultimately get more for your money. You may get less bells and whistles but they are just that ... bells and whistles. What Onkyo will drop in terms of the B&W you will not lose in what really counts: clean power, crisp processing, flexibility and terrific performance.

What would you rather have:

1- a receiver that has more show but less go
2- a receiver that has less show (but nothing consequential) but much more go?

I'd pick 2 any day of the week.

I'm sure that you can find an entry to mid-level Onkyo 2000 model being blown out somewhere. The same philosophy applies to Denon, Yamaha and whatever else. It's up to you to do your homework by going to www.audioreview.com and www.dvdtalk.com and finding the general bang-for-the-buck concensus. I'd do the latter.

Good luck.

I've been pleased with my Pioneer VX409S (or something like that, I know the 409 part is correct) which I've been using for the last month. It has plenty of options for connections including three digital connectors (one coax, two optical). I managed to buy mine for $200 at Costco, but they seem to run around $270.

I have a Sony STR-DE925. The 945 is an updated version of it. My receiver is "eh." Takes over 5 seconds to switch sources and sounds merely average. I'm never buying Sony receivers again (at least the ones without ES on them). Gonna go with a preamp/amp combo next time.

If you absolutely have to be within budget i would suggest a Sherwood. I got this one for my room, it only has 60w/channel but that's exactly what i was looking for (not that i'd even dare turn it up considering how close the speakers are to my ears right now)

It also does Dolby Digital Decoding and is DTS Ready with 6 inputs and pre-outs should you want to connect it to a more powerful Amp in the future. Btw, it's also got 5 discrete channels of amplification. All for only $129 at CircuitCity.

I know you'll say it's too good to be true, but it is true. I've had it for several months and though it doesn't go as loud as my Onkyo it's pretty good for the price.

Check out my review here (second one down the list - Mike)

I agree with Bill n Opus about the Onkyo, however, I'd go for a Harman Kardan.

You can get the HK AVR-100 for $299 at Circuit City. But save your money and spend at least $499 on the AVR-300. I've got the 500 (for $399..retail at $799 - I'm the Extended Service Plan KING at Circuit City! haha) - And it is absolutely amazing.

If anything, shop around and save a little bit more money, it'll be worth it in the long run.

Have you bought your speakers yet? If not, may I suggest spending more for the speakers. Speaker technology changes more slowly that reciever technology, so it may be a better investment. You can always get a cheaper reciever now and upgrade in the near future.

I have the model right above this one. I wouldn't recommend it. It's noisy, a lot of fuzz sometimes. I'm certain there are better receivers in the price range. I mainly bought it for an entirew JVC setup that connects together so it would be super easy to operate (Stick a DVD in in the dvd player, receiver automatically switches to DVD Digital, TV automatically switches to DVD input, etc.)

I've the Technics SA-DX930 and its pretty good. Lots of features. The latest model is SA-DX940 and I think it goes for about $250.

Last time I checked, you can't get multiple s-video inputs for under $300. I think receivers that have that go for around $400-500.

Did you try the b-goods at onecall.com? Basically new stuff priced very reasonably (very high end brands).

If you want all that (multiple S-Videos and RCAs) I'd recommend the Kenwood VR407. A buddy of mine has one and it's a nice receiver for the $$$ ($299 or less). I'm considering getting one for my living room to replace my aging (and blah sounding) Sony Pro Logic.
