This is for the better.
Now it brings forth the choose your own
isp over cable that was looming not so far
in the future anyways. Hopefully that means
no more portals and more bandwidth up and down.

Okay, maybe Northpoint and Rhythms went bust or got bought up, but Covad (no matter how troubled) and Verizon are still in business. How many cable companies can get internet access to businesses, anyway?

I believe that @Home offered business high speed access through their @Work.....it had like triple the upload speed and twice the download speed......it was aroung $125 a month....I looked into at one point for my home based business.....but I believe they were closed up early this year when @Home was restructuring.

Time Warner may suck but at least their partnership with AOL means my cable modem will still be working tomorrow. :/
Though if @home goes bye bye the monthly price may go through the roof.

Does anybody know what Cox is planning to do? I couldn't find any current information on their website.

Of course Verizon is still in business but I feel sorry for anyone using their DSL service. I suffered through 1 1/2 years of their service with about 1/3 of it being down completely. Those bozos there had no clue what was up with their network and the tech support absolutely sucked.

After 9 months of RR, I've been down once and it was only for a couple hours. That so far is 99.95% uptime.

Me as well on both counts (Comcast)... Maybe 4 outages in Three and a Half Years.... I can only get ADSL in my neighboorhood :disgust: However it will be nice to see some competition openup and the UP Caps removed or at least made bigger than 128K.

I just realized I am up Sh1t's Creek without a paddle if they shutdown.... I haven't owned a modem in Three Years... I won't even be able to use their awesome netzero backup plan......

I think thats an East Coast thing. Verizon here in Western Oregon has been great, I think I've been down maybe a couple hours in a year. In fact my ISP (not verizon) rates just went down quite a bit, so DSL over here is pretty good actually.

I E-mail my local @Home service provider (Cox@Home in Orange County Calif) about the possible cut-off, here's their response:

I have had Comcast@home here in Mt Pleasant SC for 3+yrs. I have never received a single email, including this possible shut down from Comcast about anything. I expect I will be the last to know if I am going to get shut off.

I had the opposite experience. There was a couple of hours worth of downtime here and there (mostly due to storm-damaged lines and stuff), but it worked flawlessly the 1-1/2 years I had it. Install was hassle-free too.

I had RoadRunner where I lived last and it S*CKED. If you know anything about cable modems you know that you're using shared bandwidth, and everybody and their DOG had cable modems where I was! I was getting around 65KB/sec download speed! Once I moved though, I got @home, and I was getting around 300KB/sec! Yeah, I live in the relative boonies, but it was head and shoulders above RoadRunner.

So let's all smile now that we're going to have fewer choices, and cheer because the larger companies will have less competition and so will be able to charge us more. Makes no sense to me...

I know that they didn't renew their contract with exite@home and it was set to expire in June 2002.
