I knew 5 kids in my neighborhood who were homeschooled while growing up.

1 is my best friend, went to highschool with me, is one of the coolest people I know.

2 of them fight with almost everyone, get in trouble with police often, are emotionally abusive to their girlfriends at times (call them names that aren't appropriate), take potshots at local kids with a BB-gun for fun, and get away with everything because of the "trust" their parents have built with them over the years and the fact that in the small town I used to live in, they are related to everyone

The last 2 barely do any schooling, run around the neighborhood barefoot, sometimes barely clothed (not due to poverty or anything, just hate shoes/clothing),have broken into people's houses, etc etc (around 7th=8th grade age)

IMO, for the most part, homeschooling is a very bad idea

Home schooling requires mature, responsible parents who care about their children and are active in their lives.

Oh wait, that should be a requirement for having kids...

I don't think I would have liked to learn sex ed from my parents. It was bad enough learning it from a 46 year old balding virgin named Stanley that wore nothing but bike shorts, polyester tshirts, and a whistle.

It would be better learning sex ed from Janet Reno.

Most adults that are mature and responsible don't have kids. Don't let them fool us, we're all mistakes.

I've only known 5 kids that were home-schooled. One was extremely social 3 were 'normal', and one was a little weird.

The reason that many homeschoolers seem socially inept is because they started homeschooling for that very reason. I know that's the reason I left public school and it probably is the same for many others.

EDIT: And by socially inept I mean that I don't get stoned out of my mind, I don't commit vandalism, and I don't care about $200 shoes.

This is an excellent point. Most of Anandtechers went to public schools and they are socially inept. I'll admit it: I am to a degree.

Indeed. You could make a poll asking if you went to a public school, private school, or if you were homeschooled. The socially inept public schoolers here would no doubt hold the majority.

The two homeschoolers I know well (who have now been going to public high school for about 2 years) are both socially fine. Both of their parents, however, are very over protective, trying to control most aspects of their lives for no very apparent reason except to have power.
