Are most home schooled kids socially inept? All the ones I know are. Discuss to hearts content.

Wow, I know alot of kids who are schooled in the public school system who are socially inept also!
I think there are alot of pros and cons to home schooling, it's not for everyone.
I do however wonder if the parents who do home school their children take away their kids ability to cope with real outside life, and real outside problems. It seems it would be too easy to shelter a child in this way... and they may not get the type of social stimulation that is needed for social problem solving skills.
But I have never heard of home schooled kids turning out bad.

I would rather have a socially inept MIT grad than a prom king who works at Plaid Pantry.
I love how 90% of this board doesn't think you can do both. No way you can be a great athlete, a popular person AND do well in school and get a great job. Socially inept people will never do well in the business world. Even if they have a great idea, if they can't share it, it won't become a reality.
Enjoy playing in the band/drama club.

Most home schooled kids are socially inept partly because it's hard to make friends at home, and partly because they tend to come from psycho hyper-religious families.
This may be true for some religous/conservative regions, but it is not at all the case here. Many parents here simply believe the public school system is not good enough for their kids. Some send them to private schools, some have them homeschooled.

High school is "real outside life" and contains "real outside problems"? Man -- if so, wait until they start living on their own.. 😛
I was homeschooled/unschooled (Google it) K-12...I'd like to think I turned out alright.

they tend to be. i also think it is a bad idea because parents arent always capable of recognizing learning difficulties their kids might have. they also aren't trained to teach. this esspecially applies to more advanced (high school) topics like calc, chemistry, physics, etc.

Coming from a guy who lives in Evanston, and who's public high school is probably New Trier (One of the best, if not the best public High School in the state) I find it hard to believe many people that the public school isnt good enough. Face it - an overwheling majority of home schoolers are religious wackos who cant fathom not having 100% control over their children anf what they learn.... Ohh noes... Evolution id EVIL...

I went to homeschool during middle school (went to public during elementary and high school, and college of course). I wouldn't say I'm socially inept. I can interact with peope perfectly well. However I am social inept in terms of getting a girlfriend, of which I have had none (and am 23). It's a weird, because I actually get along with everyone and my job is VERY people oriented and I do a good job with it.

😛 24, went through 2 yrs at a community college and 1yr at a university, and still never even dated. Hah!
Whole thing depends on how well you acclimate to people. For me, public school taught me that people are often needlessly cruel and irrational and are to be avoided if possible. Home schooling just might have worked out better, but I don't know if my parents ever even considered that as a possibility. We've generally been a "follow the status quo" family. Having me skip grades was never mentioned once, though I probably could have done so with no problem.
