It depends. Some are and some aren't.

I know a lot of parents that make sure their home schooled kids go out and interact with kids. ie basketball leagues, baseball leagues....

The one that I worked with was. Over the past 3 years he has begun talking (we now get complete sentenses out of him). However I also know a few others who were home schooled through grade school then sent to public high school. They were well ahead of their classes in knowledge and fit in quite well.

In my experience all home schooled people I knew are socially inept. But no observation like that one is always true. There will be some home schooled people who are socially skilled.

The best home schooling probably includes a mixture of kids from different families doing activities together. But then, it isn't truely home schooling anymore.

Quite a few are, quite a few are not, it just depends. Are there more home schooled kids that are socially inept? Yes, probably.

I love how 90% of this board doesn't think you can do both. No way you can be a great athlete, a popular person AND do well in school and get a great job. Socially inept people will never do well in the business world. Even if they have a great idea, if they can't share it, it won't become a reality.

For my part though, the only home-schooled children I know are my aunt's 7 kids. The father runs the area Rec Council, coaches sports teams, and is active in the community. Since there are 7 of them and they are all active in sports, church, chorus and music, etc. they do not seem to be socially inept. Rather, they are quite outgoing. The oldest kid has just been accepted into some Christian college and is a computer geek, with parts and computers all over the house.

While to me they seem to be weird (different), they either don't know it or are stable enough to not care what anyone else thinks.

I was home schooled. My situation was a little different though because I started working full time when I turned 16 at a retail computer store and that did help with social interaction. I fimrly believe that being home schooled and combined with being part of a homeschool group (social interaction, sports, etc) is much better than public school. That being said, private school is the best IMO.

seriously. I'm athletic, good looking, popular, did good in school, and am getting a great career going. Plus I'm a social butterfly

My wife was for a little while and turned out OK, I on the other hand am a homogenus public school product, take that for what it's worth.

I've known a few, none were socially inept, and they were on average smarter than their peers in book knowledge.

I was homeschooled K-12. I had quite a few friends. Went on to college and have made plenty of friends there too. It may have set me back a bit in my worldly wisdom; however, I made up for it quickly when I joined ATOT.

Well, I learned how to be a totally cruel asshole from public schools... and I'm not sure that's exactly a plus.

Home school, like anything else, is all in how you do it. Many homeschooling families will set up play dates, museum trips, etc. with other likeminded families in their communites. The fundie homeschoolers get their socialization protesting in front of Planned Parenthood. Others will get involved in sports or other activities like dance or music.

Of course, if you homeschool your kids and never let them leave, well, then you'll end up with socially inept kids.

Most of them probably didn't really go to school and were beaten by their parents.

Home schooling until high school is fine. I think kids should go to high school at the 9th grade. They need to develop social skills, and there's nothing like the high school experience. Depriving them of the horrors of grade school and middle school is really not such a loss.

Besides, teaching your kid through high school would be pretty tough for just a pair of parents. That's a lot more work than grade/middle school.

Most home schooled kids are socially inept partly because it's hard to make friends at home, and partly because they tend to come from psycho hyper-religious families.

I don't remember much, if anything at all, from grade school. High school is definitely where it's at. :thumbsup:

From what I know, parents might teach until age 16, then send their kid to the Junior College....

High school was a total waste of time ... I got a full 8 hours of sleep a day in high school and still graduated in the top 20%. Didn't really prepare me for college though.

This may be true for some religous/conservative regions, but it is not at all the case here. Many parents here simply believe the public school system is not good enough for their kids. Some send them to private schools, some have them homeschooled.

I am Socially fvcked up and I went to a private Catholic Elementary school and a public middle school / high school.


I have never had a day of home schooling...........
