i feel your pain, sorta. I bought a house about 6 months. It was built in the 50s. The flippers did a bunch of remodeling but some stuff that I had to do -- run iron gas pipe for a dryer hookup, rip out electrical wire from a wall (wire was clipped), install new garage door. Next up is landscaping and some minor electrical.

I gotta say though, through all of the great epics, trials, and tribulations of NuclearNed's life, his wife is alway involved in some way...

If you're talking about in the corners, that was probably for practical reasons
1. So the doors don't hit each other when you open one of them.
2. Because kitchens usually aren't precisely the same width as some number of standard size cabinets. It's cheaper and easier and not in any way inferior to leave a small cavity that can't even be seen rather than use a custom sized cabinet.

The gap behind our old cabinets can't be explained by either of these reasons. For example, one corner of the kitchen had a standalone hutch. The back of it was spaced a good 4"-5" from the wall. This didn't affect the doors in any way...

I know the previous owner pretty well. He's a pretty good handyman, so I'm sure he had a good reason for the weird spacing, but I just can't figure out what it is (and neither can my Father in Law or the guy I've hired to install our cabinets). My best and only guess is that the spacing was to allow easier access to the wiring for the cabinet lights.

Heh, I know the feeling. Houses built in the 90s (from my experience) are full of questionable decisions made by the builders...

And early 2000's. They must've used the cheapest crap and labor they could get their hands during that time frame. A lot of the crap I'm finding is horrendous - we complained about a floor squeak in on of the upstairs bathrooms - they fixed it all right - doing a recent remodel of the bathroom floor - I counted 52 screws within a square foot radius of where the squeak was.

Now..I'm not sure if it's normal or just cheap ass house builder - but they used 1/2" OSB particle board for the underlay [underneath the vinyl and rug] and 5/8" subfloor [wood looks like it's about to fall apart].

Wow, to fix a squeak? Geez, at my parents' house, the cat walking around will make the floor creak here and there, and she's only about 8lbs. The only place that doesn't creak is the basement, obviously thanks to its concrete floor. A person walking around will generate a symphony.

My guess would be that the house was built around 50 years ago.

Another awesome NuclearNed story! I was laughing out loud at "platinum impregnated granite that is mined by Yeti sherpas from the highest cliffs of Everest." I can also personally identify with this since the previous owners of my home were incompetent retards and every single time I try to do any sort of work on the house I run into something idiotic that they did which I now have to fix.
