Home network keeps losing bandwidth?!

I have a home network with a laptop, server, and my desktop. Whenever I'm downloading anything via BitTorrent, everything else just times out. My Firefox refuses to load anything, and the laptop downstairs can't surf the web either. I have a 4.5 megabit connection, so it definitely shouldn't be lagging like this. If I unplug both my cable modem and my router, it works fine again for about a day, and I have to do it again. This is extremely annoying, and I have no idea what's wrong. I'm using static IP configurations for all 3 computers. The laptop and my desktop are connected by 802.11g, and the server is on a wired 100 megabit connection. My wireless router is the Linksys WRT54G. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure your BT client's upload speed is restricted to around 2/3 or less of your total upload bandwidth.

Is your wireless connection secured? It's possible you've got people leeching off you.

Do you have your BT client configured to allow many thousand of connections? Sometimes limiting these as well as upload can stop slowdowns, but sometimes that just seems to be what you get with BT. I know... and I live with 3 other people who use it too!

You are probably maxing out the total concurrent NAT translations in your router. Either try limiting them from the BT application, or buy a new router.

Here are my options on Azureus:

Max upload speed: 30 kbs
Max download speed: unlimited
Default max upload slots per rorrent: 50 (If I lower this, my downloads slow down)
Max number of connections per torrent: unlimited
Max global connections: unlimited

Change the last one "Max global connections: unlimited". Try 6000, and go down from there until you don't have any more problems.

BTW, are you using the most up to date firmware on your router?

SOB, I'm having the same problem, with the same router!!!!!!!!!!!
Did u manage to solve the problem ?
I am using the most uptodate firmware from linksys. I'm thnking of installing DD-WRT

Are you using a v5 version of the WRT54G, or one of the older ones? There are a number of "known issues" with the newer v5 units. Other than that, all I can think of is that there have been some issues in the past with the number of NAT sessions and their default timeout period. Newer firmwares supposedly "fixed" that issue. I don't use BT, so I've never run into that issue. My v2 router works just fine for everything else.
