Home Depot data/credit card breach

I wouldn't really worry about it. After the Target one, my bank canceled my CC and just issued me a new one. Target also offered a year of credit monitoring (well, paying for the service). The whole reason I stick to CCs is because I don't have to worry about it. Card stolen? No worries, just cancel it and get a new one. Lose a wallet with a few hundred dollars in it? Well, shit....

Well, you are paying for it. Just not directly.

Son-of-a ... shopped at Home Depot B&M a few months ago and paid with my Discover cc.

Assuming Home Depot and/or Discover don't contact me, what is everyone doing? Proactively contacting your card issuer or waiting for a mystery $129 charge from 7 Eleven in Sao Paulo, Brazil to appear then cancel?

Do we know for certain everyone (100%) was compromised/hacked?

I just went to Home Depot for the first time in a couple years on Sunday. Had $75 in gift cards that had accumulated over the past couple years, spent that, plus $2.68 on my visa card. If my wife hadn'r been with me, I would have ony spent about $50, and wouldn't have needed the CC at all.

Shrug. I've changed my password on my HD account. Not sure if I should get the card re-issued or not . . . they tend to do that about every 3 or 4 months anyway.

glad I haven't used my card at home depot since march.

It wouldn't surprise me if they went back even farther than April

I'll wait but we also account for each purchase in the statement so its pretty easy for us to recognize a fraudulent transaction.

It's not really an issue, mainly an inconvenience. If I have anything setup on autopay using that card then I have to change them all.

Hmmn thanks for the reminder, not sure if I have a HomeDepot.com account or not. If I do, the least I should do is change my password.

This is the main reason we don't use debit cards anymore... Use your credit cards and you pretty much have jack shit to worry about.

This is going to keep happening until the FTC starts levying *huge* fines, as in billions of dollars. These companies treat your info as their property and don't take care of it all that well.

I don't even see why they need to store CC data. They should be wiping it after a certain period.

Glad I don't shop at HD! Sucks for those who do, though.

so when are the chipped CCs coming?

And how are they safer for online purchases?

The problem with Chip & Pin cards is they still have a magstripe for places that don't have the chip reader, so while they are more secure once in the company database, they are still susceptible to skimming.

I have no idea how safe they are for online purchasing.

We have had chip cards here for years now. Nothing about online security that I know of. I still use all my chip cards the exact same way. Only difference in the past few years has been the introduction of the 3 digit verification code (?).

They should probably force people to use Verified by Visa or whatever equivalent is out there for other cards.
