Ooh, I gotta go check mine out. I'm STILL rebuilding after Katrina and I'm getting close to needing flooring...

Thanks.

Darn, already have my Katrina flooring done -- don't recall any great specials likes this when I really needed it.

Aztech, my heart goes out to you - I got over two feet of water in my house, which was in a "no flood" 😉 zone in the western Mississippi Gulf coast. Luckier than many -- I still had a house to come back to! Hope all is going well for you.

My uncle's house got 4 feet of water.... in the 2nd floor of his home after Katrina in Bay Saint Louis. When he repaired the home (they just took all the drywall out and used antifungal agents to kill everything and redid the wiring), they went with a type of cement floor that is painted / glazed / coated with various designs. Looks really good and it would be a good deal easier to clean up if it happens again. (Helped him shovel the carpet / dry wall / flood sludge mixture out.... not pretty, although I am sure you already know).

He was in a "no flood zone" as well by the way. But, he had flood insurance even though the insurance company told him it was near impossible.

Hey Schadenfroh, that's my town! I am about a mile and a half inland, close to where the Winn Dixie was. Anyhow I better quit chatting or the hot deal dudes will fuss about not being on topic.

Just make sure to take every precaution you can with regard to ensuring the finished quality of the end result. Home Depot is getting a pretty bad rep. for sub-contracting work out (no actual Home Depot employees do in-home installation work) to shoddy contractors.

But Home Depot is responsible for the end result, if it's bad make them do it again. As long as the contractor is payed by HD, they have to stand behind it.

Hot deal. My mom is going to carpet her place soon, I'll check to see if that deal is available in her area.

You did not read the story in his link did you? HD did everything to NOT fix the problem and even said...

"Boothe says in January she reached an impasse with Home Depot. A district manager told her it wouldn't be cost effective to fix the problems. Atlanta headquarters told her they would finish installing the granite and that's it."

Theer are a lot more stories like that. Until the media got involved HD kinda told her to pound sand. NOW they will fix it after it has gotten into the publics eye.

It's not that hard - if your rooms are rectangular. Mine are. It was a piece of cake to install it.

edit: but, I should mention that I'd have gladly paid even $200 for the installation of carpeting in 4 rooms of my house. (all 4 were rectangular, none of the 4 required anything special like seams - no room would have taken a carpet installer more than an hour to do. $50 an hour seems more than reasonable, but Home Depot charges a flat rate per square foot for the installation.) And, why can't my local Home Depot ever have sales like this? Their idea of a great sale is 12 months no interest.

Ya, a piece of cake if you're so inclined towards doing stuff like this. Carpet isn't the easiest thing to do.

Last year, I paid $0.51 sq.ft. for installation with my carpet, about 400-500 sq.ft. total. This was with a local building/lumber/do-it-all type company. It would've been $0.39 sq.ft. if I wanted to tear up the old carpet and haul it away myself, but I'm lazy and had the money to pay someone else to do it 🙂. The two guys showed up on schedule, and had the entire area done in a matter of hours. The transitions from hallway to rooms was seamless, they did a fantastic job.

when i did it, it was with 18" carpet squares. cheap, cheap, and oh did i mention cheap? did 1000+ sq ft for a few hundred bucks, LOL. thank you surplus warehouse!

that was over a year ago and even with a ton of wear it still looks exactly like it did when it was put in.

RC-Willey if they are in your area has free installs at least twice a year. In addition RC's carpet is significantly cheaper than Home Depot for the same carpet.

That's why you pay with a credit card and dispute the charges. Contractors not completing work to a satisfactory level IS grounds for charge disputes.

But from the story...
" But when the installation was finally done four months later"

You have to dispute the bill in 90days. And if she did that HD would say work is not done.

Of course I do all the handy work around the house. Have 200Bf of Wenge wood to make a platform bed and will probable move to Cabinets next when we buy our next house.

Also all HD does is hire local and just up the bill and/or cut the rates of the installer. So why not cut out the middle man and probable get better work at the same price or maybe cheaper.

Does anyone know if the $99 installation includes stairs? I am getting a quote and they are trying to charge me for stairs.

As far as I remember, the clerk in my local HD said yes. The sign said $99 any house. There was no footnote listing any additional charges for stairs.

I was wondering the same thing, I have a whole second floor to do and this includes the stairs up to it...

So, are you getting the stairs included in the $99 price? I am not sure from the "I am wondering" part which way it is.
