I wasn't aware that obamacare was a form of health insurance.

He means some doctors won't accept the plans that are sold on the exchanges, which is true.

The Affordable Care Act is far from the best solution to our country's healthcare issues, it's just the best we can do for now.

Our per capita government healthcare spending is close to the highest in the world, and we only provide government healthcare to a fraction of our population. Our per capita private healthcare spending is about the same as our government healthcare spending. Our total healthcare spending is about double what most industrialized countries spend.

But i like how you used your simplistic logic and then accused others of "lacking a brain."

Well said.

Think of it this way: The cost of certain things such as food, gasoline, insurance and education have actually not increased at all. What's really happened is that our currency has been destroyed, and we just havent fully realized it yet because certain sectors are being held down in order to prevent the headline inflation numbers from forcing recognition of the fact that our currency has been destroyed by our central bank conspiring with wall street.

If people really knew and understood the damage that has been done over the last 10 years or so, they would be demanding grand jury indictments for every wall street bank executive as well as every single federal reserve board member. A good attorney could make a very strong racketeering and conspiracy case against these groups. And a jury of their screwed over peers would ensure that they all go to prison. But alas, no one does anything because these same groups happen to control the media which shapes our perception of what's been done to us.

Now that I'm no longer working for a firm (well, I guess I am since it's my own firm now), we need new insurance. My wife is a high school teacher (meaning she is basically paid in third world devalued currency), and for simplicity sake we're planning to put the family on her insurance plan.

When I was in DC, my firm had Blue Cross PPO - great coverage/benefits - paid about $400/mo.

Here in Florida, we had some shitty United HMO - paid about $400 - $500/mo.

For a teacher - a state employee making next to nothing in salary - there are two HMO options, both of which are $1100+/mo.

What the fuck is going on with insurance prices? And how the hell could a teacher ever afford to pay those rates on her/his salary alone? Not to get political, but what exactly was "affordable" with this newfangled health care law?

Just have her pay the $1100 out of her six figure teacher pay. Not that hard.

I didn't accuse anyone of lacking a brain. Are you self-selecting into that category? It appears so.

One of us is bringing facts to the table, and the other is arguing semantics and using ad hominem attacks. I don't think I have anything more to prove here.

Now it's ad hominem attacks. I still don't see anything in my posts that falls into either category. I implied that anyone with a brain should understand the basics of supply and demand, an obviously extreme statement and one that anyone who has seen professional wrestling knows cannot be literally true. But I did sort of expect that most people here would understand it. It really doesn't fall under the category of "simplistic logic" either. It's more what you would call an "economic principle." The fact that it's not complicated shouldn't throw you off. Principles often aren't.

$559./mo $10k deductible.

The 16 stitches I got for the leg cut was $1700. Asked the hospital if there was a reduced contract rate or if I could get a break for paying it all. Nope. "We're required to collect the full amount until you meet your deductible." WTH?

Reduced contract rate is where its at:

Code:
Service Amount Billed	Discount	Covered Amount	Copay / Deductible	What Your Plan Paid	Coinsurance	What I Owe
TOTALS	$41,565.40 $35,177.40 $6,388.00 $0.00 / $933.28 $5,454.72 $0.00 $933.28

That was one night in hospital...85% discount for the insurance gang.

PPO repricing is another scheme by the insurance to collect more revenue. Insurance companies collect a portion of the cost that was "saved" from employer groups and hospitals can write off massive fake losses to maintain their fiction of non-for profit status. Cost are stupidly high because both parties benefit from high prices.

Yes, when you said I was self-selecting into the category of people who lack brains. Oh, you phrased it as a question, so obviously it wasn't an ad hominem attack. There we go with the semantics again.

Your simplistic logic was where you took the laws of supply and demand and applied them to healthcare to make statements that are very easily disprovable. And I very easily disproved them, because the things that you say are impossible have already been done in other countries. Other countries are providing universal healthcare (and a high standard of care) for half of what we spend on healthcare in this country.

Nothing in the laws of supply and demand preclude the possibility of universal healthcare. I don't even know where you got that idea. You don't need to explain it, because I've already shown that it is obviously false.

And the idea that we can't reduce healthcare costs assumes that there are no inefficiencies that can be removed from the current system. There are.

So as much as you'd like to think you've settled this country's healthcare debate in two sentences, you have not.

2 x-rays for the kid's arm...$880.
EKG for the wife. ..$850.
Her stress test...???
Going for a nuclear stress test next week...$2700.
Carotid doppler tomorrow...???
At this rate, I'll be out of pocket most of my deductible and $6700 for insurance that didn't pay shit.

The upside, , if my pipes are clogged and they fix them, insurance should pay 100%.

Man, I loved the government health insurance plan when the wife worked for the congressman. $250 deductible, $20 co-pays...

I can't see anything getting clogged the way you are getting shafted.

Serves her right for leeching off the government. What? Do you expect me to pay for her insurance just because she raises my kids for me? You some kind of library? Next you'll say teachers should have unions...

Keep in mind that Florida is one of the 25 republican run states that did not join the ACA Medicaid expansion exchange, so naturally the insurance rates are going to be higher, which is exactly what the GOP wanted.

So don't blame Obama. Blame Ric Scott and anybody who voted to put republicans in a position of power.

Crap like that is why I will NEVER vote for any republican to hold ANY office, including dog catcher.

My insurance policy is under $100 a month. An Obamacare plan is $300+ a month, for similar-ish coverage. Oh sure, it has "extras" like women's health... crap that I absolutely don't need since I'm a single male, but apparently that doesn't matter to them.

At least he was "nice" enough to extend the mandate so I can avoid the pain for another year or two.

Working in an industry that has to deal with medical costs and things like Medicare has really shone a light on one of the major issues with healthcare costs. Medicare demands they get the "lowest" price offered. But then, they only pay a fraction of that anyway. So in order to make enough money to even do anything the pricing of stuff has to be artificially high. For everyone. Utterly ridiculous.

And people still think the government will make things cost less

Our old health insurance system was pretty mediocre at best. This current thing now is an absolute disaster. Why people thought the government doing this was such a grand idea when they have proven time and time again that they mismanage almost everything else boggles the mind.

I don't think I even have $400/mo extra. Glad I live in Canada and don't have to pay that nonsense. Free healthcare FTW.

If you believe it is actually free I have a bridge to sell you. For free.
