whats teh performance benefit for reinjecting your own blood?

The article says they found someone else's blood in his system. I thought dopers used their own blood....that's what sounds so implausible about this.
If that's true, he would go down as one of the largest morons in the world... including Randy Moss for intentionally running into a police officer in his car.

A spokesman for Hamilton's team, Phonak, said Tuesday that tests on Aug. 19 and Sept. 18 both showed evidence of blood from another person, according to a statement sent by cycling's governing body to Phonak. Follow-up tests were scheduled for later Tuesday.

How fcking dumb can you be? I hope at least the person had the same blood type as him, or else it would be on the level of Micheal Jackson dangling the baby over the balcony... also that's really dangerous using another's blood, you don't know where they've been or what they could have.

It would be hard for him to stash some of his own blood during the season as his performance would go in the can until his body replaced what was taken. Not really an option for a pro who competes pretty much every week of the season.

No it is not dangerous. Not more dangerous than the blood transfusion you get going through surgery.
And obviouslu he got the right blood type. He would die otherwise.

That's another black mark for cycling coming after Filip Meirhaeghe admitting to doping. Hope this doesn't go out of control like the '98 Tour.

It amazes me that these guys do it knowing there's a good chance they'll get caught. At least in baseball previously without mandatory testing, you can get away from it, but these guys get tested so much and if they even get caught once, it ruins their career like it did Meirhaeghe's.

This year has almost been worse considering the big names that have been brought down.

I'm not surprised at all -

I'm pretty much convinced that most (if not all) pro-cyclists are on dope (you can flame me, I don't care 😛 )

edit: and I still think that it's the greatest sport on earth

Unfortunately I think you're probably right. It's hard to see how anyone can compete cleanly against drug users in a sport that is essentially all about fitness.

I find it sad if this is true, because Tyler has always seemed like a very hard worker with little to show for it. Actually this kind of blood doping (as it used to be called) seems like a smart way to enhance performance without lending itself to testing positive. I hadn't realized they could now test for it.

Tyler was and is probably a very hard worker just like ALL other pro-riders. You are not going to win a big race by taking some pills. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment to come to the level of riders like Tyler, Museeuw, Pantani, Riis, Zülle ... but they all have one thing in common, they were all on dope when they won big races. Riis was never caught in the Tdf but it was common knowledge that he had a hemo of 60 when he won it. When there is a lot of money involved, they all going to take dope to gain that 2% that could give them eternal glory

just my 0,2 eurocent

Hehe...I don't think they blood test for beer levels. 😛

Seriously, I'd never dope because I'll never be a pro. My biggest limiter at this point is that I'm not anywhere near my "genetic potential" on the bike so something that gave me a 1-2% advantage would be totally pointless. The whole reason these guys dope is that there's a crapload of money on the line and that little push can be the difference between winning and being the guy who came in second that no one remembers three years later.

There usually isn't millions of $ on the line for the average game of counterstrike. 😉
Interesting... I read the video game market was about to eclipse the movie industry.

I'm glad they are working out ways to check for this. I wish other sports tested more...

There's certainly a crapload of money being made in the gaming industry, but not by those playing the games for the most part. In cycling, the sponsors pressure the team for results, if the riders don't produce them, the sponsors may go bye-bye and the riders may be without a team to boot whenever their contract is up. It's all about putting your jersey (with sponsor's logos) on the front of the race, first across the line, and on the podium.

I have no idea who Lance Armstrong, Barry Bonds or Tyler hamilton are.

But i am in favor for doping, especially EPO and combinations of other lethal drugs, keeps them from reproducing which is a good thing.

Actually, I'm was just trying to point out it (cheating) is a major issue in other multimillion (billion) dollar industries. While I'm not going to go quite so far, some people consider computer gaming a sport, but like darts I disagree to an extent.

Everything you are saying is applicable to the PC gaming market. Don't think players make $, wrong, it's just only the 'professionals'. Just like cycling. Look up the CPL. Over the past seven years, the CPL has hosted over 20 main events in the United States alone, with a total attendance of 35,000 gamers and has paid well over $1,500,000 in cash prizes. What was that about millions on counter strike? 😉

Players+game manufacturers+tournaments+sponsors=$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$44one

I guess the point is that the motivation is the same. If there's money on the line, someone's going to be tempted to cheat.

Blood doping is just soooo gross. Imagine having bags of your own blood in the refrigerator. And the one day taking them out and shooting it into yourself. Bleeeeeh!

BTW, great Seinfeld episode. "Now if you'll excuse me I have to go fill my refrigerator with my own blood."

I gave blood for the first time last week. When I was doing it, I thought, "hey, this isn't so bad... is this all that's involved in 'blood doping?'" Really, compared to 'roids or the other crap jocks put in their bodies, their own blood doesn't seem too bad.

hopefully he's cleared.

I've become cynical. I think they should legalize all kind of doping. Even if they use it, they still have to finish the race. It is still an awesome achievement to finish Tour de France or the Tour of Spain.
They'd have riders dying left and right if that were the case. Guys would pump their hematocrit up to 60%, get dehydrated on a long stage, and keel over because their blood was now pudding. It'd be very bad for the sport even if guys didn't croak; cycling fans love the winners because they suffered and worked hard to get there, not because they took the right pills that day.
Wow, a 60% hematocrit! That's a lot of cellular mass man... When I was powerlifting mine was only at 49%, I can't even imagine... can't be healthy with that little plasma...

Also, I wonder how they can tell if you were blood packing? Do they compare it to a sample that you would have to submit while training, and then do a mathematical equation for erythrocyte cell production in a normal athlete? Interesting to know more about the test and how it's conducted.

The way they would test for something like this is, hopefulyl they have taken quite a few blood tests of yours throughout the years, and they use that to establish a history, a sort of baseline of what to expecr from you. Then they have a range that is acceptable for you and if your test is outside the range it then they figure you have been cheating.
I wish they would use blood testing in all sports. As of right now in swimming it's optional, but I hope they make it mandatory.

Phonak just suspended Tyler and said that they would fire him immediately if he can't prove his innocence. 😕 Just yesterday they were 100% behind him even if the B sample test coming out soon are positive as well... 🙁

EDIT: Article

Update again....Phonak has supended him. See first post.

In a statement issued by the team under the heading "We believe Tyler", Phonak team boss Andy Rihs said that he was shocked by the news as well. "For the moment, we have to concentrate on the facts," said Rihs. "These seem to speak against Tyler. But so long as we're not 100 percent certain that he's guilty of manipulation, we will believe him." However, the team also stated that Hamilton "has been suspended pending further notice. He will remain so until the proceedings are completed. If Hamilton is not able to prove his innocence, then the contract will be cancelled effective immediately."
