Holy Hyper-threading, Batman!

I'm so happy! This weekend I was finally able to build my new 2.6C Intel box! 🙂 I've been out of the Intel scene for a few years, so I was curious to see what all the hype was about, especially after reading how well the "C" Northwoods were overclocking and how HT was really helping DC projects. I have to say that I am very impressed. After jacking the fsb up to 250 (3.25ghz - RAM 1:1) and letting her rip, I'm happy to say there were no problems whatsoever. On default voltage, too. 🙂

As far as HT goes, I'm amazed. During the last 24 hours, my new Intel rig crunched 15 WUs! That's a wee bit faster than my A64 3200 (2.0@2.2) cranks them out! I couldn't be any happier with the performance. And as I learn more about tweaking Intel systems, hopefully I can bring the time down even more.

I'm glad I stayed away from Intel for so long. It gave them a chance to develop a super cpu during that time so I could come back to the darkside in style. 🙂 (PS - You'll still have to pry my A64 from my cold dead fingers, though. 🙂 )

i built myself a hyperthreading box 3 months ago after getting new one at work and it was the best computer building decision ive ever made. i went sour on amd after horrible experiences with via chipsets and went with a P4 2.26 about 15 months ago now and have never looked back. fantastic performing chip for any dc project 🙂

My tantaum...

I have a P4 2666@3600 ( 3820 for benchmarks ) as my seconds box ( now ), and it was damm fast.

I replaced it with a 2.8C@3500 and boy, does that *ucker fly... but the Kingston ram wasn't much good of...
So, about 3 weeks ago, i bought a 2.4C M0, and start playing with it... 280fsb... nice... next exchanged the PC3700 Kingston
with PC3500 GEIL, but it much lower latencies... wow, that was nice...

Haven't finish playing with the 2.4 yet, but it feels very fast overall...
Have 27º idle and 37º 100%... nice

It sure feels faster with HT...

zodder,

Do you have Dual Channel (2 sticks) of ram in that system? My 3.2GHz P4 HT (Dell) cranks out 17 to 18 per day. My 2.8GHz P4 (non Overclocked) also produces 16 per day. Both have Dual Channel. Hopefully, you'll see more like 17 to 19 per day on that jewel...assuming you're running DC ram. 😀

I agree, P4s thrive on raw speed and bandwidth. Feed it as much memory bandwidth as you can. 🙂

So is this rig using those satas you've been searching for?

Having a hard time myself tracking any down.

It sure is the rig. 🙂 I stuck an old WD 60GB 5400 drive in there for now. I hate the fact that the HDD makes the computer feel slow. I might stick the storage drive from my gaming rig (WD 200GB 8MB) in there and use the 5400 in my gaming rig. That should give it a much needed boost.

I'm 99.9% sure I'm running DC memory. I have 2 - 256 sticks of Geil pc4000 in the 1st and 3rd RAM slots. It wasn't running in DC when I had them in the 1st and 2nd slots. I'd love to squeeze as many WUs as I can out of that sucker. I'll try to mess with it the next few days and see what happens. I'm new to the Intel scene, so any tips you guys have would be greatly appreciated. 🙂

The simple ability to run dual threads on one CPU gives benefits in these situations. But just wait till native 64bit hits. The performance increase for number crunching will blow everyone away 🙂 a 4 way opteron structure when hitting native 64bit with BETA software nearly doubled its performance.

You just wait, that A64 will soon show its power 😉

But I am happy intel is still around. Price competition is everything 🙂

Isn't the other way around ?!? 😕

Also, this thread if to show how good HT is, not to tell A64 is even better😛

I think you should keep a fast drive in you gaming rig though.. Nothing is more frustrating then to wait looong minutes while UT2004 loads a huge level 😉
I now just installed Windows on a WD Raptor 36Gb 10K drive, and never knew Windows could boot that fast! My other 2 drives (2x 160GB Maxtor 8Mb Raid 0) is just laughing at UT levels 😀 Only problem with Raid is the noise, it seems to double compared to no raid.

I love the OC'ing power of the P4C cpu's, just awesome! Does a better job in Seti then my A64...

Lets try a prescott on Your board 🙂 I have 2 - 2.8's running @ 3.1 (conservative OC ) temps are @ 38C default voltage. Averaging between 17 to 22 a day seti, depending on AR.

😀

Yeh....but going to hate :frown: giving up the one I built and am currently burning In for my friend. Built him and awesome system.

Giga-byte GA 8IPE1000 GT mobo

Intel 2.8 E cpu

1 Gig (512 x 2) Corsair XMS Extreme Ram ( 1 more gig comming)

ATI AIW 9800 Pro 256

Plextor 708A DVD RW

WD 80 Gig Special ED (Raid won't do much for him 😛 ......Just checks his Email 😀isgust😉

Soon to come Creative Audigy II sound card With Logitech 7.1 Suround Speakers.

And to top it all 42 inche Plasma TV for a monitor.

Boy I'm Jealous ...................42" Plasma Screen....can you Imagine that?

42" Plasma screen.....can you I magine that?

Plasma is a bad idea for computers. They get burn in quickly and die fast because their cells wear out. I would return that ASAP and buy a HDTV instead.

Dual channel doesn't help much in SETI, just a couple minutes at best.

I have a RAID 0 setup using 2 - 36GB Raptors on my gaming machine. The other drive is for backups and MP3 storage. 🙂

Dell Poweredge 600C
512 MB DDR Ram
Intel® Pentium®4, 2.4GHz/533 FSB
40 GB Hard drive at 7200 RPM

Anyone know how many WU's this will crank out in a day? We just bought a new proxy server and of course I just got the permission to run a DC project on it. (I will run Seti command line)

There isn't any P4 with 533 BUS with HT enable, except the 3.06.. 😉

he speaks truth!

Ahhh... whoops.. 😉 I was looking at the next processor up on the Dell specs page. 😉 You are correct. No HT.

I haven't said a thing! 😀
Those raptors in Raid are really fast! My single Raptor is making a very high pitched noise which is very annoying!
Have you been able to run HDTach on those babies? Compared to my Maxtor 160Gb (single HD) it's just 4Mb/sec faster and has a lower burst speed 🙁
