Holy hell, our house just got hit by lightning

As far as the fire department can tell, everything is ok. I feel kind of embarassed that there are 4 firemen in our living room just kinda here because of it 😱 .

Trust me, mentally, they're appreciating the fact that they aren't having to bash down your walls to get at some smoldering crap.

New concern: damaged wiring in the walls. Is there a way to test without ripping out drywall? My boss and co-worker got me thinking about this. If it frazzled an outlet, I don't see why it couldn't melt the insulation on wiring.

Only way I could think of to make any sort of measurement is to put a signal in one side and measure on the other and see if its normal tolerances. This wouldn't really tell you about the condition of the insulation though.

I may pull up some of the attic flooring to look at the wiring there. I can add that to the task of installing new cabinets, counter, backsplash, hood vent, floor, and plumbing. It should be easy to find time. 🙁

At least life is interesting 😉

it's such a hard thing to check - since the insulation can be perfect in 99% of the wire, but completely gone in a small section.

There are companies that test this crap - call an electrical inspector

What does OZONE smell like? The interesting thing is I probably hear the bolt that hit your house

Most will say bleach but that is a by-product. O3 is a VERY strong oxidizer (ORP = >2V! nearly twice of Cl!) and will produce cl and br (OPO) when it contacts olfactory fluids. High volume flow cells used for sterilization of bunker water and captive marine systems can produce outputs > 5% O3 by volume. This will knock a human down quicker than 100 Mike Tyson punches to the groin. Most of these systems use either pure O2 for the source O2 OR air that has been passed through a cascade type regenerative dessicator with dewpoints approaching -100°C.

Dang, are you a chemical engineer? I work in industry where we use ORP meausrement and oxidizers for bio control. Havne't heard someone talk like that outside of work in a while.

No I just know one. 😉

Well I replaced the GFCI outlet and took apart the old one. The ciruit board is scorched, the inside of the plastic is blackened, and there is severe damage to a few of the capacitors.

I don't think they mind being there.

holy crap! :Q

my cousin's home was struck by lightning in Troy last month, too. it caught fire, but luckily no one was hurt. the house is in bad shape, though. tons of water damage, of course, from the fire trucks. they're living in a hotel for the next few months, while they rebuild the home.

i guess the moral of the story is.....it could have been worse? 😕 glad no one got hurt.

I had this happen last year. I actually took a bit of the strike myself. One of apparently several routes to ground was through my PC, through my mouse, through my body, into the floor.

Still using that mouse.

This is why I use a wireless mouse 😉

Glad to hear ya'll are OK and there was no (serious) damage to your house, Wiz.

We aren't doing a tearoff though! Can you guys install shingles? All the beer and barbeque you can take, but the beer wouln't come until after work. I don't need my shingles to look like this: ////||\//|\\\/|

😛

I've done shingles 3 times in my life I think i'll manage 😛

EDIT: Even if I'm drunk 😉

If you were in WI I'd offer to help. But there's that darn lake in between us... But I'll be helping a fried of mine finish his roof thsi fall. We did the main roof last year and will do the garage this year.

It's the same kind of smell you get from a laser printer.

It honestly scared the crap out of us. The dog ran into her cage.

and what does a laser pointer smell like?

I can guarantee everything I write not ripped from anywhere. If I do, I always credit the author / source. I also despise quote forgery but that's another topic.

One thing being internet(less) for ages teaches you - if you're gonna sit at the Captain's table and want to talk about something - you better know what you're talking about! 😀

EDIT: That's it? Just lost a GFCI? Good grounding helps cut down on losses particular the starting of fires. Ever consider replacing it with an AFCI (at the panel)?

I suppose that would depend on where the previous users had their hands. :Q
