New concern: damaged wiring in the walls. Is there a way to test without ripping out drywall? My boss and co-worker got me thinking about this. If it frazzled an outlet, I don't see why it couldn't melt the insulation on wiring.

Only way I could think of to make any sort of measurement is to put a signal in one side and measure on the other and see if its normal tolerances. This wouldn't really tell you about the condition of the insulation though.

I may pull up some of the attic flooring to look at the wiring there. I can add that to the task of installing new cabinets, counter, backsplash, hood vent, floor, and plumbing. It should be easy to find time. 🙁:roll:

it's such a hard thing to check - since the insulation can be perfect in 99% of the wire, but completely gone in a small section.


There are companies that test this crap - call an electrical inspector

Well I replaced the GFCI outlet and took apart the old one. The ciruit board is scorched, the inside of the plastic is blackened, and there is severe damage to a few of the capacitors.

my cousin's home was struck by lightning in Troy last month, too. it caught fire, but luckily no one was hurt. the house is in bad shape, though. tons of water damage, of course, from the fire trucks. they're living in a hotel for the next few months, while they rebuild the home.

i guess the moral of the story is.....it could have been worse? 😕 glad no one got hurt.
