Holy hell, our house just got hit by lightning

As far as the fire department can tell, everything is ok. I feel kind of embarassed that there are 4 firemen in our living room just kinda here because of it 😱 .

I can tell you they would rather be sitting in your living room rather than shooting water into it

And 1 sheriff. 😱

Anyways, they found heat coming off the one outlet, but they OKed it. Looks like all is clear. I feel better now that they checked.

And I see neighbors sitting in their windows/doors watching.

The fire dept. is sending someone with a fire detection camera.

Get some pix of them scanning. 🙂

Glad to hear everyone's ok.

There's been some lightning to our north we may sail into - this time of the year those (storms) tend to last through the night.

And no pics! 😛

That's affirmative. You can NEVER be too safe.

I have tried numerous times - long exposures+moving ship = bad pix. 🙁

Chain lightning is very cool though. I've seen it numerous times off the FL coast. We about 300 miles east of Daytona Beach right now.

Hmm... The GFCI outlet that was suspect won't test. I'm 100% it worked previously. I'm wondering if it took the shock. Good thing I have a few sitting around.

Does it have power? IIRC if there's no power the test doesn't work.

There is power. 118V on both outlets.

That's two volts low. 😛

Yeah it probably got hozed. That's a lot of joules branching down the vent pipe. You have cast-i DWV lines? Might want to check those flashings up on top for arcing damage as it could leak over time.

Hows the roof?

The attic looks fine. I cannot really see much outside without daylight. My flashlights dont give me enough light to really make a decision.

Good thing I'm replacing the roof this fall!

Yep, cast iron. It actually runs directly behind the outlet, too.

There's probably evidence of flashover in many places - this kind of discharge will produce lots of ozone immediately.

Damn that sucks. I am surprised your internet is still working. The hardest thing is determining damage to wiring and things inside walls. Hopefully everything is ok. Time to call your insurance agent I guess. What part of the country are you in? NM, I see you are in MI. Me too, but no storms up in my neck of the woods.

What does OZONE smell like? The interesting thing is I probably hear the bolt that hit your house

Thats the smell you smell around the bumper cars at the amusement park.

Glad it doesn't look like alot of damage. We had a very close strike a few days ago - huge flash lit up everything like daylight and the thunder was instantaneous and enormously loud! The whole house shook and the kids were screaming 😛 I swore I'd find a blown up tree in the back yard the next morning, but nothing.

Glad to hear you and Lola are OK! I'll be moving back to Rochester on Aug 27th if you two need help tearing that roof apart I'm game!

I had this happen last year. I actually took a bit of the strike myself. One of apparently several routes to ground was through my PC, through my mouse, through my body, into the floor.

Still using that mouse.
