Tried to mod my ps2 by myself. Finally figured it all out and i accidently took off a transistor!!! it's the really really really small ass one too. i don't think there's any way i can put it back. does radio shack sell equivalent transistors in bigger size???

I think we have a winner here, folks!

It might help to solder posts into the board, then wirewrap the transistor to the post. Unless you already fried the transistor. If you're trying to resolder the transistor to the board, I highly recommend either using a heat sink (no, you PC-only geeks, not the one that you put on CPU fans) or a 15-watt (definitely sub-30 watt) soldering iron.
 
LOL I'll bet you were using an electric soldering iron, too, and not a butane

yeah thats prolly ur best bet...just go buy one from toys r us or wherever and put the one u have in the box and return it..no point in saying u broke it to anyone beacuase its gonna cost ya. And who the hell is gonna keep track of anything that u returned it with a superglued transitor 🙂?
 
deja vue! I just installed a mod to my PS2 tonight! :Q I only was doing a single wire USB mod. I melted off "B" point, but my PS2 still boots and works! I was soooo relieved. I haven't tried a umm... *special* game yet with it 😉.
 
Just buy one at fry's and return yours to them, they have the best return policy, if theres something in the box we'll take it back 🙂

Assuming it didn't get desoldered off the board and clung to bacon frying hot soldering iron until he noticed. It will have the characterisitc changed severely or failed entirely.

What kind of soldering iron did you use? A 250W mega zigwig soldering gun they use for putting together stained glass?

People like you really piss me off. Must you suggest a criminal action? :| We don't endorse this kind of actions here at AnandTech. I sure hope whoever you bought it from recorded it's serial number. I heard return inspection has changed considerably at Fry's thanks to people like you who feels it's okay to make fraudulent returns. Supposedly they check serial #'s on every components that gets returned. 😀

 
I think places check the serial number on the box and also the PS2 when you return it so people can't switch in a different unit.
 
i dont think the transistor is fried. it's still in good shape physically. i was using a 15W soldering iron with a very pointy edge. i suppose it's possible to put it back myself but my eyesight isnt the greatest either. i tried booting it but the disc won't eject nor it will load. i believe the transistor has to do with the wires connecting to the laser.

i'm gonna try to put it back later today but iwas wondering if it really matters what direction i put the transistor back in? it's not labeled like the bigger ones so i'm not sure which end goes on which side.

as for returning it to the store, i'm pretty sure they'll check serial #'s.

With transistors, direction is irrelevant. Either direction works fine.

i know the basics of electronics 😉 to be honest soldering it wasn't hard at all. the real problem is my eye sight isnt the greatest. and my table lamp bulb went out before i was almost finished so the lighting wasn't great.
