Is flexibility that impressive when it comes to karate? Because that seems to be all the crowd cared about...

Kicking literally straight up in the air is pretty near impossible for most people.

And if you needed to kick that giant from The Princess Bride, you could!

Yeah when she kicked straight up it was cool, but sometimes she would just lift her leg straight up and everyone would cheer.

Most gymnasts can do vertical splits like that though, can't they?

Aren't those multi-kick performed in a single raise with just bending at the knee useless besides showcasing? I assume they don't have that much power.

Not if you're Chun-Li ;)

That part that is so hard is just that. Lifting her leg up, using just her leg muscles, to a straight vertical position. Even if you can do the split son the ground, lifting a leg straight up like that without momentum from a kick or by lifting it with your arms is incredibly difficult.

I used to be able to kick very high with a front snap kick, but just lifting my leg and holding it I'd be lucky to get 90 degrees.

Hmm now that I think about it (and yes, I tried it) that's pretty damn hard. I was barely able to get ~70 degrees. I guess that's why I'm no black belt karate master :)

I haven't seen many, if any, gymnasts that can do that with their legs without a running start or sitting on the ground to do the splits.

Whats shes doing is 90% gymnastics and maybe 10% karate anyhow.

ding ding ding.
A good punch to the face or a good all chick hair pulling fight, and all her "karate" is out the window.
Besides, she obviously is just doing it for show. She bows and goes way to far down (lol) and looses eye contact with the persons she is bowing to.
