Very quick and cheap cooling solution, I was looking around at work and found an Intel fan (counter clockwise), and since my 3000+ was running idle at 41C, I though what the heck. Out come some paperclips and a little of McGuyver, and 5 mins later, I have a stacking fans config on top of my stock AMD heatsink. Now, my CPU is sitting idle at 36C....... muaawaahahahahahahahaha.

Here's the stock HSF. Here, you can see where the paperclips will clip onto, top and bottom slot.

Paperclip rigged fan, front. Top secret stuffs...

Paperclip rigged fan, rear. Oh teh no... now I'm gonna get John Asscroft up in this thread.

Whaaaalaaa.... forced induction.

EDIT: Since I did this, my original hsf drop about 1000 rpm, so if you have a fan controller and keep the original fan running at it's speed, it'll get you even cooler  Oh, and the fans are spinning in opposite direction...

EDIT II: So other people have tried this and report a cooling of ~5C also... I'm solicititing this idea to Enermax, Thermaltake, and Speeze. You guys are my back up.

This is YET ANOTHER compelling argument for the introduction of the :cookie; icon.

I have to agree. And these kind of threads come up all too often not to have a :cookie; in our repertory of emoticons. :p

You don't know what 5 degrees will do, once I bump the core voltage up a tad. I was afraid of doing anything to it since it's the work test comp. Will post pics tomorrow.

I gotta do this too... I have to put a desktop fan in front of the HSF everytime I startup UT2k4 otherwise the heat will make it shutdown instantaneously. Months of testing led to this conclusion.

Heheh that's pretty cool, no reason to rag on him. I'm interested in pics as well; I want to know how you did it.

Another thing I noticed also, my main HSF is now a cool >1000 RMPs less than it was previously spinning.

I need better cooling. CPU hits 60c if it's under load for long enough (35c with CnQ enabled & idling), I think a better HSF would fix the problem tho (a64 3000+). Hopefully the Arctic Silencer will help my case somewhat.. well, video card atleast.

is that just an everyday cheapo Radio Shack 80mm fan ? If not, would it be enough ? I really need better cooling for the summer.

Both fans are stock cooling, one comes with the Athlon64 3000+, the other from an Intel P4.

So, if this "cookie" icon were to be implemented, what would you suggest it look like? I agree on its necessity, however it's universal representation should be explored and agreed upon before going forth.
