iits the undercarrige of a full size van.

the pulleys are mad eso that when the crankshaft turns at 2krpm the pulleys turn at 8k rpm thus giving the power.

when i get home from work ill post more pics of the car. it currently sits at summit racing in akron.

I have built many Alternators. Judging by the size of the Stator coil (the piece you see sandwiched between the two metal halves) they may in fact be big enough to support 400 AMPs.

However if you actually attempt to pull the full amperage the load (of all these at once) would be unreal. The vehicle would have to be moving at a highrate of speed and when you pull the load would be like applying the brakes.

I suspect most of the units are dummy's and for looks only.

A+ for effort and concept though.

Perhaps when cold. At operating temperature it's more like 275A. At the limit it even drops more.

What an archaic way to produce power in a vehicle. <shudder>

Cheers!

Those coils are nowhere near enough to support that amperage, they would require a case the size you see on big rigs, truely monsterous alternators that can produce 400 amps.

A 400 amp alternator at full boil would require close to 15 hp to operate, 15 times 16 alternators = 240 hp.

I agree to an extent, but it's what somebody just happens to enjoy, much the same way you happen to enjoy remaking an arcade machine :)

Yeah but it's not a waste of time or money since I get something new from it. I wouldn't be able to play these games otherwise. With audio stuff, I can listen to the exact same stuff on my $50 speakers and they sound great to me.

I think they enjoy building the stuff more than they actually use it when it's done

You could play those games on your computer using an emulator. Instead, you build a dedicated cabinet. Someone who puts that many alternators in a vehicle is into the competition scene, and they thorougly(sp) enjoy doing it.

And as for your $50 speakers, there is a WORLD of difference between the stock sound system in a vehicle versus a quality tuned SQ (sound quality) competition vehicle. They aren't even comparable.

My best friend is in to audio. He works at Tweater after just finishing a year of work a private install place that's popular in San Diego. He has a very expensive setup in his car. It's very well done.

I've listened to the high quality music and compared to mine, you can't really tell a difference, seriously. His can do louder and at those levels I'm sure it's less distorted, but seriously...who listens to their music that loud?

And for the MAME; that's our primary tv (hooked up to cable). The computer is needed as mentioned. So the only thing we added was the wood and controllers. Well, the wood was dirt cheap (along with the paint) and the conotrol panel was just over $100. The difference between playing on a keyboard in your room vs a common room arcade that has arcade controllers is very much different.

That probably wasn't the best comparrison for you to use but I see your point. Nonetheless, you don't actually obtain anything more from it so I fail to see the benifit/cost ratio being high

these alt's are only used for 30 seconds at a time. the car is a trailer lover. it drives no where. pure looks.
more pics1
more pics2
more pics3
more pics4 (not exactly work appropriate)

o yea, the undercarriage picture i do believe is taken from a mirror thus why it looks extremely strange. they are not dummies, you need that power to run 25000 watts of amps.

You could put an electric motor in there and run the van on an electric motor.

Being a knob will get you nowhere. You KNOW this setup isn't made for listening, but for competition.
Same as how Top Fuel dragsters are meant for racing, not driving.

Exactly. So you agree there isn't much point to it then? ;)

They are not the regular size Alts, they are the larger variety you find in the bigger Cars like Limos etc.

The Monster Alts you speak of for the Trucks run at a much higher voltage since they must charge a 48 Volt Batt system.

Speaking of higher Voltage system, next year Cars will be produced with a 42 Volt system. There will be a regulator split for old 12 volt Legacy items.

42? BS. Why would they use an oddball number like that?

42V is the next voltage. It's true.

LOL! Are you serious? Wow, they only use it for competitions? Then I must say, that truely is a waste of money.

well the thing is .. comparing stock speakers to aftermarket... stock speakers dont come with subs in da trunk, which sounds a whole lot better for certain types of music. pop in an e40 cd on an all stock system, then pop it in someone who has all stock + amp+subs, just that is difference enough to make me have subs. Although i do think its pointless for people trying to make it sound loud outside of their car... it seems a lot of people care about the "BluRb" sound outside that other people hear and not about the sound inside (ghetto cadillacs with 2 15"s in the trunk come to mind with rattlin trunks), which is important. as for competition, i dont get the point, but whatever floats their boat, nontheless i need to get one of those MAME arcade things @,.@!

I say it looks cool man!

I wouldn't spend that amount of £££ on it as that is well excessive for my tastes. But when I have the funds and my own car I'll add in some nice speakers and a sub if I can fit it in without impacting on my boot space! I appreciate better sound quality at higher levels. But don't need to be like that dude! But it is good for him.

But I wouldn't spend £1k on a car sound system. A few hundred £££ would be my limit on that. After that I wouldn't be able to justify the price on it. I'd rather have smoking speakers at home. But if you spent more time in a car then it may be worth spending more. Also the more you spend on something you get dimenishing returns for value for money in EVERYTHING.
