Holy crap - stop the rain! MAJOR EPIC historic flooding here in upstate NY!

This is getting bad.... really REALLY bad!!!!

Well, we survived Irene's rains in decent shape, but the remnants of Lee are CLOBBERING us! We are on the verge of HISTORIC all-time water problems up here in the southern tier of NY. It has been POURING all day and it just has not stopped. We had bad flash floods this morning/afternoon and now we are forecast for flooding on the major rivers at or WORSE than 2006 when we broke records. I left work early and had to alter my route home 4 times due to impassable roads.

I am fairing fairly well - about an inch of water in the basement and our carpet and some minor things are ruined, but many people in my area are going to have really bad problems. This is going to be one for the history books in a very VERY bad way 🙁

**** UPDATE: ****
Hey guys quick update.

1st - we are OK and our home is fine except for the basement - we took an inch of ground (not flood) water. The carpet is toast and we are pulling it out, but that is small potatoes compared to MANY in our community that will probably lose their homes.

A part of our village in Endicott is under the Susquehanna river and has been evacuated. Down the river in Owego (the village I work in) the situation is very grim. The entire village is under water - the school district office I work in is sitting in three feet of water, the Elementary school is completely flooded, and our high school/middle school complex took flood water too. This is a disaster of incomprehensible proportions for this community. The Susquehanna river in Owego went from 17 feet on noon Wednesday to over 38 feet in 24 hours. the previous record from the 2006 flood was 35... no one is sure where it crested (somewhere around 40 they think) because the gauge went under at 38. It is just unreal.

LOTS of photos here

don't worry. soon it will turn into snow :\

States in the south deal with that year end, year out. Ya'll deal with it once or twice a decade and its the end of the world.

In all seriousness that really sucks, hope ya'll make it through.

the rain is likely bad now because Irene preceded the current storms. You are still dealing with her effects.

this is how hurricanes work.

Yeah, I'm certain that's the reason...🙄

I sense a disturbance in the endoftheworldnutter force...you are needed there.

Just heard on the news that the flood walls in Binghamton are going to overtopped when the river crests - by more than a foot! We have received 6-9" of rain so far and doppler radar is showing we may get 3-7" more tonight!

I'm actually quite grateful of the summer we had. For once, it did not rain every single day. In fact it was WAY above average in terms of heat, and staying dry. While the heat was too much at times, it was nice to be able to go outside without getting soaked.

I was hoping the storms would reach about 40 miles further west than they did. But, certainly not hoping for THAT much rain. The Genesee river is just a bit to the West of Binghamton, and the water flow is still a little below average and unkayakable this weekend. (Too low.) Good luck to everyone to the East of me.

You're just being provided with enough water to become one large skating rink when it gets cold.

That would be cool. They should ban cars in winter, everybody has to skate to work. Part of a new community health program. 😀 Instead of snow plows they just have Zambonis.

I live in Endwell.

This was a short video taken from the CVS in West Corners earlier today. Crazy!

I saw that video earlier today! I used to live less than a mile from there and would go grocery shopping at that (overpriced 😛) Weis.

I've also had the pleasure of watching videos of friends on Facebook traveling on the water on pool inflatables and even doing belly flops into the water. 😱

EDIT:

Also, I've never understood... why is that area the "southern tier" yet it's also referred to as upstate NY. The only people that would really call it upstate NY are on Long Island, but then again... that's as far south as NY goes. 😛

I've seen worse

(from LA)

I wouldn't wish it upon anyone though. Hope everything doesn't get too bad.

Apparently there's been more evacuations issued. My one friend who lives off Court Street in Binghamton was just evacuated. She lives on a flat road too, so it makes me wonder how bad it's gotten there.

It's the Southern Tier because it is the lower counties of Western/Central NY (all the ones that border PA -- Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Broome, Chemung, and one other that I'm forgetting). So it's the Southern Tier of Upstate NY, if that makes sense. It probably makes more sense if you were from Buffalo or Rochester or Chautauqua County, where we try and not think of downstate at all.

EDIT: Almost forgot to talk about the flooding. I have a friend in Binghamton that decided to stay even though everyone is leaving. I had to facepalm her.

Ah, that makes sense when you combine the two terms. 🙂 I've always heard them used apart, which seemed odd. Although, I'm sure the people in north-east NY would argue that they're the true upstate!

It almost seems like there is a Pineapple Express type event for the NE. Hopefully Nate doesn't do a Lee and head up that way as well. It's scary to think we are only halfway through the hurricane season.

They've been warning of this type of thing for years. Tropical moisture ends up further north more often with a warmer climate.
