I never had a Droid before 2.1, so this is only a recent purchase experience...

1) Awesome battery life, I can use it moderately for 2 days without charging it. Couple of hours of music, surfing, emails get pushed throughout the day (my work Exchange), some calls etc.

2) Google Navigation... no need for a GPS unit.

3) Random stuff I use it for, bank accounts, trading, pics (though the camera is barely passable). Checking out local numbers, restaurants, reviews. Standing in line and not being bored...

4) Some apps are actually amusing and useful. Movies app, How to videos, and stuff

And I haven't done anything yet to "mod it", the only reason I would do so is to use Tethering...

But not all is perfect, the Droid doesn't have enough physical buttons (and no one change songs with the screen locked), unified Gmail would be awesome, and it could really use a Google Docs app. Speed wise is adequate, but it does stutter here and there, which might be a reason to get the OC mod...

Anyway, carry on...

If you're planning to root I recommend you get ROM Manager from the Marketplace. It makes adding custom ROMs way easier for the Droid and it even supports OTA updating. It also has a feature to go back to factory stock if you wish. I use Cyanogen ROM personally with my Droid overclocked to 1.3GHz on a low voltage kernel.

Droid will be shelved/sold in a couple of days since my Incredible is being prepped for shipping. :D

I can't stand HTC products honestly. The Incredible has some good hardware inside but I'm thinking you'll find the build quality to less than what Moto puts out.

1) Ehh? Better than iPhone sure, but not awesome. Symbian probably will kill in battery life by far. Im actually quite disappointed by Android's battery life coming from S60. Granted it's a far more capable OS and data is pulling/pushing left and right, but even leaving Twitter apps and Facebook on S60 doesn't seem as detrimental. I'm hoping for improvements on Android here.

2) Yes. Google Nav is nice. However, Garmin Mobile XT is still my favorite. Maybe they'll one day push that out for Android.

3) Really want Mint for Android. Mint for iPhone is awesome.

4) Tethering for wifi requires Root. I suppose this is what bugs me. Devices like WinMo and Symbian ones can do it out of the box. I've been doing this for years, and I find it funny how my two Android friends (prior to me getting on the Android train) asked me how I was tethering via Wifi on our Vegas trip. Yup. It's natural and easy for us. But I suppose rooting isn't the toughest thing.

But yes, overall I'm very happy with the Android experience. It still needs a little more tweaks here and there, but I honestly hope the app standard starts rising a bit.

Does not require root. I haven't used it, as I'm rooted, but people on other forums have responded positively.

Wifi tether, not USB tethering. PDA Net can handle USB tethering, but from what I've read in order to tether wirelessly, you'll need root. I don't see anything in this app that says wifi tethering, but I'll certainly check it out.

Interesting, reading more it seems to be USB tether but you need to do some configuration. What I loved about my S60 device was that setting up the tether app was all phone-side. It wa slike setting up a router. All I had to do was select my source connection (AT&T Internet), and I had the option of setting a WPA key. I did that. All I do now is hit start on my phone, and it turns into a Wifi hotspot. Anyone can connect to me if they wish. It makes it easy on the go or if a friend wants to use internet, or for me to use my iPod Touch, anything...

I haven't used the Droid personally, but I think the consensus is HTC quality >> Moto quality.

there's a 3rd party app called Gdocs that's free. Never tried it but it has decent reviews.

It's not wireless. I was posting a free tethering option that does not require root.

Yea, then you'd need to play with ones in person. The HTC phones are plastic on plastic. The Iphone is top quality, and the Droid is a close second.

It's too limited, only does a "notepad" style editing... there needs to be Gdocs that can do everything Google Docs can do...

i disagree. the eris is a much more solid phone then the moto droid. the moto droid slide feels like it is always either going to just break off or slide crooked. it isn't that well made. the eris is a solid little phone, and feels much more comfortable in your hand then the iphone or the moto droid, having used all 3.

i have a feeling once the incredible shuffles the moto droid to second tier status, a lot of moto droid users that didn't like the keyboard, and other things, will be coming out defending it.
heck, even the devour feels better built then the moto droid.

I don't know, mine feels pretty solid. Not getting into HTC vs. Moto debate, just saying. :D

maybe the three i got to use weren't so solid. the biggest thing i noticed is if you push the slide from one corner, it would slide awkwardly. my previous slide phone was very solid in that manner.

on the other hand. i absolutely love the droid UI. having 7 windows (or 3 in the moto's case) is nice compared to the UI of the iphone. plus, i don't know about you, but the sound quality on the ERIS is insanely better then the iphone, especially in the LA area.
