I never had a Droid before 2.1, so this is only a recent purchase experience...
1) Awesome battery life, I can use it moderately for 2 days without charging it. Couple of hours of music, surfing, emails get pushed throughout the day (my work Exchange), some calls etc.
2) Google Navigation... no need for a GPS unit.
3) Random stuff I use it for, bank accounts, trading, pics (though the camera is barely passable). Checking out local numbers, restaurants, reviews. Standing in line and not being bored...
4) Some apps are actually amusing and useful. Movies app, How to videos, and stuff
And I haven't done anything yet to "mod it", the only reason I would do so is to use Tethering...
But not all is perfect, the Droid doesn't have enough physical buttons (and no one change songs with the screen locked), unified Gmail would be awesome, and it could really use a Google Docs app. Speed wise is adequate, but it does stutter here and there, which might be a reason to get the OC mod...
Anyway, carry on...
