Holy crap, have you seen this open letter from a RIM employee?

Ouch.... that's seriously disturbing. I think the two CEO's probably run the company with the same corporate mindset as if it was a government division, and that can't end up too well. I am Canadian (even moreso, a public servant as well), and I want Canadian companies to thrive, but this does not bode well... You simply can't have the same culture at an IT firm.

When times are bad, the people revolt. I bet there's no letters like that in CEO inboxes at Apple or Google or maybe even MS.
I'd actually love if RIM started innovating again, having 4 legit companies going at it would make us even happier!

love this part

25 million iPad users don’t care that it doesn’t have Flash or true multitasking, so why make that a focus in our campaigns? I’ll answer that for you: it’s because that’s all that differentiates our products and its lazy marketing. I’ve never seen someone buy product B because it has something product A doesn’t have. People buy product B because they want and lust after product B.

Also an important note regarding our marketing: a product’s technical superiority does not equal desire, and therefore sales… How many Linux laptops are getting sold? How did Betamax go? My mother wants an iPad and iPhone because it is simple and appeals to her. Powerful multitasking doesn’t.

That employee really likes Apple.

I didn't get that impression at all. He's coming from the perspective of someone working for a company that doesn't seem to have any clear direction and is suffering because of that. He only mentions Apple as comparison points or something his relatives want/own.

if I was working for a company that's laying off half it's staff while apple employees wipe their ass with $100 bills I'd be an applefanboi too

That employee really likes Apple.

Because 1) RIM laughed at them and now, Apple is laughing at them - 2) People want Apple products for their simplicity and apps.

Say what you want, but he's right.

I'd support BB becoming a leader again, I love an underdog, up to the point when the underdog is no longer the underdog, in which case its just another case of the red socks.

Meh, whether you agree with him or not, I have doubts as to this article's author's authenticity. Is it actually a RIM employee? Sure, that's possible...is it really someone as "senior" as BGR is trying to hype it to be? I doubt it.

Every employee has fans of competitor's products. Plenty of people at Microsoft have iPhones, and I bet there's Apple employees with Android. That doesn't make their opinion groundbreaking or anything - nothing is said in this letter that hasn't been said before.

It's true. Google, Apple, even Microsoft gets it... it's a phone that can run relatively easy to develop apps. Thats it... fulfill the above in the sexiest hardware you can. Profit.

I think the hardest thing for a company to do, is to change directions completely. Which is EXACTLY what RIM needs to do.

It's a really well thought out letter and I think he nailed some of the things wrong with the mobile industry as well as what was wrong with RIM.

I really don't understand the two CEOs thing. Why not make the next person the COO or something? Is it that big of a deal that you have to be both called CEOs? Is it a pride thing?

I dunno, its like kicking someone when they're down, I think RIM will survive and do well, they do need a management change. BGR is tight with some RIM PR folks, I have little doubt this came from one of them...

My good friend started with MS a few months ago and had to give up his iPhone 4. Companies want employees using their products, which is a reason why Dell is replacing all company owned devices with Dell products - my Dell vendors all have Venue Pros, or will have one in the upcoming months.

I highly doubt Microsoft made him give up his iPhone. Microsoft did a promotion where they gave all employees a free Windows Phone 7, maybe he just took advantage of that, but its well documented that a lot of people at MS have iPhones, whether their top brass likes it or not is a different story.

Uh no, I'm pretty sure when they said they'd pay for his phone bill, it was only if he'd change devices. Granted, he didn't have to pay for the device, but he had to switch in order to get the $.

So they gave him a free phone and offered to pay for the service, but only if it was a Microsoft device? That's a MUCH different story than him "having to give up" the iPhone, or even denying non-MS phones access to corporate email. I stand by my statement earlier.

Microsoft, Google, Apple, HP or otherwise, if the company's paying your phone bill, they have every right to tell you what kind of phone to use if you want to take advantage of that policy. This is true at a lot of companies, and not just the OS giants. This isn't Microsoft ordering people to get rid of their iPhones.

Try not to think like an apple hater for once and you will realize he is right.

I'm not apple hating, I get along with apple. Its just that letter, while the points he/she made are accurate, reads like an applephanboi. If its an open letter, reveal the name. Otherwise its just propaganda for the sake on shining on apple.

Now, if RIM has any business brain cells left they should sell their tech (email) to the highest bidder and reap $$$ from licensing. They, IMO, are too late for devices to save their ass. One thing RIM does and still does better than anyone else is email. So, sell the tech, remain alive financially, take a couple of years and to some R&D and maybe then come out with a competing product.

Me thinks you are way too paranoid.

There is absolutely no way this person could be disgruntled with RIMM and actually, shocking I know, admire the way another company works? Noo, this is a piece of propaganda inserted by apple!!

Give me a break.
