They want over $39,000 for next year (before financial aid). There is definitely not NEARLY that much worth of knowledge/life experience being given to students. I think it might be time to start looking into alternative options for education.

Overpriced School.

you'll make your 4 years of tuition back in your first 2-4 years of employment. well worth it. carnegie mellon is a top-tier university with great programs.

Well, I still may be able to graduate in under 4 years, which would definitely help, but no matter what it is absurd.

I was looking at CMU pretty hard for a while, I really liked the campus (the price tag, however . . . ) and now I have set my sights on Rice U. of Houston.

I think I can get in w/o too much trouble, grades and scores and extra-curriculars are where they need to be, both my parents went there, at least one of my uncles did (triple legacy=score) and the final price tag will be around 25 large. nowhere near the 40k that CMU wants.

And, Houston will have a great climate fall-winter-spring (but back north I go for the summer!), and Rice has better academics. And, I can bring my car because they have enough parking for each student to have eighteen cars (blatant exaggeration, but anyone who wants a car can have it because they have a stadium-sized parking lot at their baseball stadium . . . which is part of the main campus)

So, I guess, Sable or no, there is a good chance that I may become a ricer . . . . (/me kills himself for bad pun)

Think about it though... if you pay that much money you can wear t-shirts that say CMU on them. It's worth it :)

My school's total cost (pre-aid) for next year is around $41,250. I get about $10k in scholarships, take out an additional $10k yearly in loans, do work study for $2,500, and my ex-stepfather both pays money and takes out loans to make up the difference. He's a real class act.. my mom divorced him as soon as I got to college, and she won't pay a dime for me education. But since I was his stepson for 17 years he cares about me enough to help me out.

I got full rides to a few colleges but I'd been in the top of my class my entire life, and really wanted to go to someplace where everyone was just as good as me, if not better. I could get getting a 4.0 at Case Western Reserve for free, but instead I'm barely avoiding academic probation at Harvey Mudd College at an extreme cost. But you know what? I'm happy, and you can't put a price on that.

dude, 2-4 years of employment is a LONG time, and all just to pay back schooling. cmu's price tag is kinda hard to justify. 130k for a private school or 40k for something virginia or wiscon... it would take a large wallet to hold 90k worth of change!!

No way! I have a CMU t-shirt and I didn't pay them a dime.

I can't believe I just admitted to having the t-shirt, though. :p

I too visited CMU and like it a lot. Decided not to apply when they told me I had to take the Chemistry SAT IIs.

houston does not have 4 seasons. Although this year has been a good one, normally its summer and then a SHORT and mild winter, and then summer again.

The point is, you'll be making more money with a CMU degree, making the bills easier to swallow.

Why doesn't anyone mention Illinois? Price of a state school (well, out of state for me anyway), with engineering and business rankings in the top five in the country.

i disagree. as a whole, i think grads from berkeley or michigan or north carolina etc can make as much, or even more than cmu grads. bumfck boise state polytechnic western community vs cmu... well thats a differnt story :)

Maybe.... Maybe not. Depends a lot on the person getting the education.

It's not worth it man. CMU is stingy on the financial aid for some reason. I got in CS, Engineering, and Business, and they'd only give me 9k in financial aid. Most other schools gave me around 18k. Pittsburgh isn't really a good college city either. New York is where its at!

Sorry. :( A bit oddly I got into Illinois but not Cornell. I had wanted to go to Cornell more, but I think Illinois may be a better fit for me.

out of the 20 or 30 people I've met in my lifetime that went to CMU, not a single one of them enjoyed their time there.

That's not overpriced.. That's how much my GF at Columbia spends.. GO.. It's an incredible school and you won't regret it at all.. You'll get into a great grad school and you'll make back that money in a few years.. Do not look for a bargain when picking colleges -you'll recret it!
