Most developed countries around the world consider electricity, water and the internets as essentials, the U.S. they are only for the rich.

I've noticed you say a lot of really stupid things.

I'm not going to disagree with you, because when faced with the facts which prove you wrong you never respond.

$60/month for 30/5 is rape?

It's quite simple. The Japanese embrace technology, while western cultures fear it and try to limit and regulate it's use.

Korea has better mobile phone service than the US. Go figure that.

They need fewer cell towers. Go figure that. Plus their willingness to pay a lot for technology is downright silly.
You should see how much time Japanese spend on cell phones.

Compared to some places... yes. I have to pay $45 for 5/<1 🙁

Verizon may be rolling out 50/5 in some areas for ~$90/month.

From the link I posted before, the Asian companies have a very large advantage over us due to start-up costs and government regulation.

I can understand the lack of FTTP/FTTH in cow country, but the urban centres definitely have the density for it.

So Move to Japan?

I am responding to the people citing population density as main factor on lack of FTTP/FTTH in America.

It's certainly part of it. Read the link I posted too.

Because NYC is filled with OLD buildings and roads thats tough to lay fibers. Verizon is working on it. Fiber is already appearing in suburban/outer part of NYC- Westchester, Staten Island....

+ it takes millions of dollar to lay fiber. Its a huge project that require planning and good execution. Public companies such as Verizon can take hit if they don't monetize on the fiber. Shareholders will b**ch and moan and CEO will get fire if money doesn't start rolling in.

Rape implies something involuntary and I'm pretty sure neither Comcast nor Verizon are holding a gun to your head

OP, if you have to lay blame, it has to be Wall Street and the U.S. government:

http://www.cio.com/archive/101502/et_pundit.html

Here's what I think. The government broke AT&T up in the 1980's. (so what?) Telecos are way more efficient when they are together. And guess what? All these baby Bells manage to merge back together. (so what? you ask). Throughout all the mergers, who benefit? The telcos executives? the consumers? WRONG....Investment bankers who charge them millions worth of M&A advisory fees. Those millions worth of money could've use to lay fibers, R&D, and whatever else.

Companies started to lay fibers in the late 90s as they see internet become a huge thing. But no one makes money on it because the demand was still low and Wall Street once again blame these companies for blowing too much money on fiber. The economy slowed and went into recession. Now it started to pick up again, online video, e-commerce and everything. The demand for bandwidth started to pick up....and now everyone is asking...where's the fiber?

The investment bankers ate it.

( Up until today, investment houses are still not satisfy with Verizon spending billion dollar capital expenditure on laying out those fiber. But the executives ignore them and went ahead with it. )

yup, always easier for a private company to make long term decisions than a public company. UPS is a recent example. their new public shareholders are bitching and moaning because UPS isn't making a return on some of its new markets fast enough. UPS never had that problem when it was private (and they had lots of success doing similar when they were private).

especially hard after getting burned installing DSL equipment in the late 90s.

Isn't this like round 2 of fiber? I would imagine round 1 involved leaving space for 2nd round. But then, the works department probably messes all that up.

Makes sense...it'll be a while before shareholders trust anything but cash flow again

The ONLY internet service I can get is Comcast. Not much of a choice there and their service sucks. I could get another cell phone provider but other they're ****** in my area. That leaves me with Verizon. So either Comcast/Verzion or nothing/****** cell service. Leaves them to adjust their rates whenever they want and short of me canceling the service, I can't do jack about it.

Yup, sounds like you're letting them to me
