im so happy to be back with tmobile!

i had them about 7 years ago. i loved them. price was the best and service was very good. then sprint came out with their sero promotion and i couldnt pass on it.

so ive been paying 36.52 after taxes for like 7 years. now with this tmo 4g plan? 31.82 after taxes, with 5gb of 4g data that makes a joke of sprints speeds!

going to a party tonight, likely end the night watching the movie, 'god bless america' by bobcat g, off my droid x2 running netflix tethered to my new 4g service! 😀

it feels so good to be away from sprint! very strange feeling!

Buy refills from callingmart.com
They have 10% coupons monthly.
Total cost $27 no tax.

yep and i havent figured out what groove ip uses as far as bandwidth, but i know its very low- like 10kb/sec i think.

for me its perfect. i studied my sprint usage over the last year- i average 150 daytime talk min, and less then 2gb of data per month (thats streaming audio all day at work, 5 days a week)

all i have to do is get used to voip calls. i hate talking on the phone, so this will be a great excuse at times to just tell people "sorry my phone sucks". well theyre used to hearing that anyway 😀

GrooveIP is low usage, but it sounds like shit unless your ping is sub 100ms.
 
I have the same plan and it is indeed fantastic. But as mentioned you need to buy refills from callingmart + use coupons to save even more.
100 minutes is a bit low even for me though; I'd be happy with 200. GrooveIP sounded like a good idea but the latency is sky high and didn't work well for me.

what i meant was i was using the droid x2 because it has hdmi out... so i was going to hook that to the tv. since my new tmo exhibit II does not have video out, but it can tether to devices with wifi. i keep the droid x2 around the house for a "landline" phone using google voice. it works brilliantly, and when i need to i can use it for things like netflix on big screen tv's.

but it was a no-go! the party was an hour away, so the whole time im flyin down the interstate at 80mph and im testing out the 4g. 1 megaBYTE a second downloads while driving at high speed! it was fantastic! the whole way down there i was in 4g... i get great reception with tmobile, just like i used to all those years ago. they just have my area well covered i guess.

so when i get there, the phone drops to 2g! at times it would go to 3g and the speeds were very sprint like.. but still not fast enough for netflix. and actually the 2g speeds are dial up rate, no joking there at all. takes a min just to load google.com. this apartment was pretty old, probably with layers of lead paint on the walls...

so, that being a little disappointing, im not too upset. from what i experienced, grooveip over 2g is not going to happen. i can barely listen to my voicemail on that (through groove ip). but 3g it DOES work fine, and when im on 4g its hard to tell im NOT using wifi. i understand tmo's 4g isnt lte type, or anywhere close to real 4g, but my god its still very fast and i can see how they get away with calling it 4g!

so well see how it all goes. i will have to learn to pay attention to my talk min, because im sure there will be plenty of times where all i get is 2g, but it is comforting to know even if i double my min allotment its only going to be another $10. and at worst i just ignore peoples calls and i text them right back like i seem to do often enough as it is!😀

did you adjust its settings at all? there are audio processing settings and when youre on wifi you can open your routers forwarding ports accordingly to get better quality. set it up right and you will actually prefer groove calls over cellular ones.
 
How are you getting it so cheap? Lowest I'm seeing is $44.99 for 2GB and 500 minutes, and thats when you bring your own phone to T-Mobile.

It's one of their prepaid plans (i.e. they are all essentially BYOD). It gives you 100 minutes and unlimited text and data (5GB of 4G data, after that it's throttled).

It's on their website under 'Monthly 4G'. This particular plan is only available on the web or at certain Walmart stores.
 
yep. monthly 4g. web or walmart exclusive only, and only for new activations.

whats cool though is no contract, and low taxes. my sprint sero plan was $30/mnth, but after taxes was 36.52. now with tmo, i give them 31.80 or so and that means im good for 30 days.

what im still unsure about though, is what happens when if im late on a payment. will they cancel my renewal opportunity? i mean i doubt they would right now as the plan is currently being offered... but say this promo ends, which i would imagine anyone that signed on will be grandfathered as long as they want, but what happens if you miss a payment? since its a monthly plan, they legally could just kick you and not let you renew.
 
so let me see if i get this: dude switches to tmobile in order to go to party an hour away and stream lame movie by tethering to his new phone, only to find tmobile cant get better than 2g reception? ouch! better go sign up for verizon before recheduling that party...

Better sign up for verizon to pay $120 and get enough data to stream 30 minutes of the movie. I guess you're right?
 
Tmobiles 3g is the fastest of the four carriers, AT&T has the fastest 4g. Only reason I would think about Verizon again is if I knew for a fact they had solid 4g coverage in places I visit where AT&T definitely did not.

yeah he must have heard a big WHOOSH when reading this thread. the fact i tried to stream netflix at a party has nothing to do with why i left sprint.
 
I use T-Mobile prepaid. They cut off your phone immediately when the balance expires. Pay ahead to prevent that from happening, or just set up an auto pay and you don't have to think about it.

i just wonder how long before they cancel the account completely and dont let you re up the account...

just wondering because this is supposed to be 'new activations only'... so if i dont pay on time every month, will i lose the chance to get back on this plan?

its not something im worried about too much of course, i can afford to pay in advance im just curious
 
I think you are overthinking it. By new accounts they usually mean that you haven't been a t-mobile postpaid customer for 30-90 days or so.

Just because your balance goes to zero for a few days doesn't mean they won't let you back on. Not sure how long after your balance goes to 0 you lose your number though.
