As a foreigner my conception of greedy american corporations is limited, but...

Isn't it more likely that this was just a unrealistic ultimatum which the companies never believed would pass?
Now they can 'negotiate' a 'compromise' and gain what they really probably are after, and legislators or atleast naive public will think that the corporations have been kept in bay.

And yes, you are probably quite right. Freedom does require eternal vigilance, once earned, one has to fight to keep it. The upside? Freedom.
