del Toro is at the point in his career where he can make any movie he wants.

I can certainly understand why he would want to walk away and go work on films that will actually see the light of day.

Blah, this probably means a delay in the Blu-Ray release of the extended LOTR trilogy too.

Can't say I'm surprised since we have no idea how long it will take until these things actually get made. I would think the logical next step would just be to throw PJ in as director, but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part. Hopefully they retain some of the development work Del Toro has already done on it because I was very interested to see his style brought to the Hobbit story.

MGM's woes have also messed up production of the next Daniel Craig Bond film.

That's too bad about del Toro -- Pan's Labyrinth had some very nice visuals.

yep. I wasn't much a fan of Pan's Labyrinth b/c the plotting felt a bit hashed to me (two rather different storylines mashed together without any kind of binding element), but the visuals were great.

His would have been a nice touch for this content.

There is plenty in the Hobbit to easily fit 2 movies.

I wasn't necessarily saying that there wasn't enough of The Hobbit to fit into 2 movies. However, it seems to not fit with the rest of the LOTR movies to split the book with the least content (again IMO) into 2 movies whereas they had to leave half of The Fellowship of the Ring out of the movie.

The Lord of the Rings was terrible. I had no desire to see Peter Jackson or anyone destroy the ONLY GOOD BOOK of the series. Hopefully this just bombs out and people will have to stick to reading it.

I think he probably either had creative differences with peter OR got another higher paying gig.

Is that supposed to end in a T, or are you suggesting I'm crying? I'm pretty far from crying as you can see. Allow me to rephrase.

Did you fall asleep during the movie or something? It was easy to follow, and not sure what you mean mashed together without any binding element. I'm not saying its perfect, but I have no idea where you'd get that.

I think if they do end up being made, Jackson will direct. They might be able to get del Toro back (wouldn't surprise me to see him direct parts of it, with Jackson doing other parts just to speed things up).

Have you SEEN any of the films?

I think he would have done an amazing job. OTOH, based on this thing I read in wired, hes got a TON of projects lined up that he wants to do, I can see why he wouldnt want to commit so much time.

Seems pan and the hellboy stuff is the cornerstone of his filmology. You'll have to pardon me if that doesn't have me holding my breath for his next endeavor.

As long as Peter Jackson is there, I have some confidence in the outcome of "The Hobbit".

agreed. i have confidence that this movie will not be nearly as good without guillermo del toro.

the loss of del toro in this movie is extremely heartbreaking.

hopefully, he takes the same vision and does his own 'hobbit' with another studio.

How many of his films have you watched? Just those? Or have you even seen those?

that's not what I said. It was easy to follow, but it was 2 movies (stories): The General vs the Resistance at then end of the Civil War, and the girl's exploration, fantasy/escape.

These two stories aren't tied together, or reflective of one another (linking them as her exploration as an escape from "the terror" around her is a bit weak and cliche'd), and there is no real indication from the filmmakers as to what the real story is--the central, unifying point. It comes out as rather clunky and un-focused as it's trying to be two different films, rather than something cleverly allegorical.

have you seen 'the orphanage' or 'the devil's backbone"? have you even seen "pan's labyrinth"?

the guy's brilliant.

p.s. i've never seen hellboy or hellboy ii, but i'm sure they're pretty sweet.

Cronos and The Orphanage are generally well-received by critics and casual viewers alike.

His filmography isn't as extensive as I thought (I suppose I was mixing him up with someone like Cuaron), but maybe you're not one for foreign films? Or something that is outside of your normal comfort zone?

The one was a direct result of the other. Because of how she was treated in the one, is why the other appealed to her. I could only assume you somehow got lost in the story, but I'm still baffled that you don't see the connection between the two (its the girl).
