That's the oldschool way of doing it. I learned in 9th grade, which I believe would have been around 1996, that the new way is 1 space. Makes sense too. I don't know what the point of 2 spaces is, other than to waste paper.

I'm 20 and was told to put 2 spaces at the end of a sentence in IT lessons at school. My university is strict when it comes to formatting of coursework: they tell you what page margins, what font, what size, what line spacing, which quotation techniques (and so on) to use, but nothing about spaces after sentences. So I reckon no one really cares!

It used to be 2 spaces because it was standard for typewriters. I think recently, not sure about the exact time frame, one of my friends told me that with the current printer technology and MS word, or other word processing software, an extra white space isn't neccessary to distinguish sentences.

eh, I just listened to him and I'm doing 1 space now, but sometimes I can't stop myself from typing 2 spaces after a period, its a force of habit. Oh well. However, when I write a formal paper, I typically make sure that I have 1 space after a period now.

I've almost always been told one space, including in my typing classes. I've heard two mentioned as well, but the manuals all say one, as have most of my professors, so that's what I use. Then again, I've never actually heard of anyone getting into any trouble for using either. I just find two spaces to be a bit "off."

New MLA format specifies it as being 1 these days. I've always grown up with it being 1, but I don't think it changed until just a few years ago. If anyone ever gives someone crap about it either way, I'd just smash their face in though.

But now that I'm in advertising production, almost all published work uses just one space.
