The Zen is bigger, heavier, and has a crappy interface. I know of no quality differences between the two devices.

Both music players hold plenty of songs, the iPod gets knocked around in the reviews because it was the first and is the best.

its not the best its sound quality is crap compaired to the zen. if you cant tell that you have bad ears. its fragil as hell. while teh zen can take a beating. the ipods menu structure is confusing as hell. and it eats PCs for lunch (read my other post). the Zen maby be a lil bigger but if you hold teh 2 side by side its not that big of a deal + its 100$ cheaper for the same amount of space, has an FM tuner also

The Zen is a hackjob compared to the iPod. My ears are excellent by the way.

Edit: Oh, by the way... sweet grammar. Yeah, I saw it before you edited it.. and there are still mistakes!

Screw my grammar. I don't care!
Fixed it for you buddy!

uhhh... how is the ipod menu system confusing as hell? it's the easist thing in the world. and the size difference is significant IMO. but this is very subjective. Then again, i didn't pay full price so i'm happy.

these HD mp3 threads are becoming the same... anyone notice that?

Hmm, I haven't seen a side-by-side picture of the iPod and Zen before. And now that I have, damn, the Zen is bigger than I thought. I personally would pay the $100 more for 10 gigs less. Most of the people on Anandtech probably wouldn't... but that's fine with me. Apple's price isn't a rip-off, it's supply and demand imho.

150 bucks for the mp3 player, another 150 for the pretty apple logo.

While it is expensive, I don't think it is way overpriced. You get what you pay for basically.

Are you kidding? You didn't own anything in this thread. You managed to just push across your Mac devotion. Most Mac lovers are like Christian extremists.

I'd take a Ipod over Zen simply because of size and aesthetic qualities. Personally, I don't use any portable audio device so I have more impartial judgement!

oh and. i'd take a zen over the ipod, simply because of the value i get, and i've heard more than once that the zen has better quality sound.

exactly. I pay a premium for lightweight, small electronics. People here would rather by an HP laptop that weighs 8lbs for $800 instead of a powerbook that weighs 4.5lbs for $1500. Thats your perogitive. I believe the opposite.

1) work out how much money you have to spend
2) go to a shop and try the ones you can afford
3) buy the one you like the best.

Don't pay too much credence to any one review - I've read a lot of mp3 player reviews, and they tend to contradict each other.
Try the things out yourself, then you'll know which is best for you.

I tried out an ipod, a zen and a phillips hd100. For me, the ipod was the flat out winner, and justified its price. If I'd waited a bit more, I would have considered the iriver ihp-120, but its still not out in Britain.

Btw, whoever it was that said they couldn't use the ipod when cycling - I find that if you clip the remote control to the outside of your jacket its a lot easier ;)

Why is no one considering iRiver iHP-120?
I know it's a bit expensive but it has excellent sound quality (unlike iPod's crappy sound quality), it has digital optical in and out, has a kick-ass remote, built-in voice recorder, and it's recognized as a harddrive as soon as you plug it into your PC.

It comes with all the cool stuff: microphone, headphones, nice leathercase, headphones adapter, etc...

I don't know, if you are in market and have some extra $$$ to spend for a better quality device (better than iPod), I think the iRiver iHP-120 is a good choice.

the value is all lost due to weight and size. all that extra gigage and dollar savings isn't going to help when your unhappy feeling that pocket strain with size and weight/interface. small problems over a long time will just diminish your experience, possibly u'll avoid using it..or use it less because of inconvenience. its not as if its chump change, they all are hundreds of bux, a little more to get something thats useful and comfortable is worth it. thats why the ipod comes out ahead, even with less capacity.

I'm seriously consider the 15gb Dell mp3 player. 20 hours of playback time, $299cdn or $249usd , it has some shortcomings but I only need an mp3 player, not a PDA. Anyone own one of these?

I have been looking at these iRiver jukeboxes lately but the price is just a bit steep for me still. I've seen the 20Gb version as low as $360, but the 10Gb is still over $300. If it was under that I'd probably get one. I've also seen the 10Gb iPod refurbs on apple.com for $229 but I can't bring myself to pull the trigger on that either. Perhaps I'm just a cheap bastard but a 3rd Gen 5Gb iPod or a 5Gb iRiver would be perfect for me.

Oh, and I find the iPod to be quite ugly.
