Have none of you ever considered using SteamBackup? You can dump every file you download to a few CD-Rs or a DVD-R and you never have to put up with long downloading times again on Steam.

Serves your right for not using the tools provided if it annoys you.

I know it's old, but it's been a while since I installed HL2. Plus I had hoped they'd changed things to make it easier.

Why do we let companies get away with stupid crap like this?

Join the thousands who won't buy from Valve anymore.

Yeah right, you'll buy Half-Life 3 when it comes out ... 😛

If they continue to use this garbage, I will never buy anything from Valve. I dang near threw the game in the garbage shortly after purchasing it. It was uninstalled for nearly a year before I bothered to reinstall. It's going to get uninstalled again soon, for good.

Suuuuuuuure.

You'll be lining up to get your DRM-Chip-Implant with the rest of us when the final chapter of Half-Life comes out. 😛

I just bought HL2 a week or two ago, and Steam is ****** up.

First, in my taskbar I have an empty application. You know how you minimize something it goes into the taskbar and you can see the title in the taskbar? Now I always have an application in the taskbar but it has no title.

Second, lots of the dialog with steam I cannot read the text. For example, whenever there is a news dialog there is no text.

Third, when I goto the store it says "Loading..." but never goes further.

Crap!

If someone tries to put a chip in me they will be in a world of hurt.

the longest i ever had to wait for some game-update on steam was maybe like 3 mins. This happened maybe once while otherwise playing HL2/use steam 900 billion times.

me <3 steam 🙂

Once again, I'm not sure there exists an exponential factor that can define the repostness of this thread.
Where's that red-headed meat eater when you need him?

I don't recall ever having any of these problems for some reason...and I have gone through the whole process from scratch many times...

<--when he formats he leaves it d/ling over night anyway

Two hours and it automatically grabbed every patch and update available. That isn't bad. But lets spin this and pretend its fvcking horrible and that if you had to install it all manually and go find each site for each patch it would be soooo much faster.

...and much more convenient.

Plenty of other games have built-in patching that causes ZERO overhead, unlike Valve's Steam. I don't know how many times I have to say this, but Valve is doing nothing special except screw the customer. Lots of games offer their games for download, lots of games have streamlined patching(hell, you can get free services like Xfire that get the patches for you), and none of them cause overhead like Steam. None of them require you to be online to play their single-player game either. Steam is not convenient, it's inconvenient.

So tell me again why I need 2 hours worth of patches?

The CS:S .gcf file by itself has grown about 250 megs since inital release.

Cause that's how big they are.
