HL2 + Steam = CRAP!

After buying a new vid card, I reinstalled HL2 (never reinstalled after last drive wipe) and went through the insane process.

I started at 3pm yesterday, and finally got to play around 5pm. Granted I wasn't hovering over the keyboard waiting for each dialog box, but come on.

The software install itself wasn't bad. It was all the Steam related BS.

This is rediculous. It shouldn't take that long to get a game installed and playable.

Steam... it's a love/hate thing. highly debated subject!

personally i like it and have never had problems, but reinstalling and doing all teh updates... ew...

I'm neutral on this topic. I think it's a really good idea, but Valve is not carrying it out as good as it could be.

I know it's old, but it's been a while since I installed HL2. Plus I had hoped they'd changed things to make it easier.

Why do we let companies get away with stupid crap like this?

I actually like Steam too. I've never had an issue myself.

It doesn't help you now but you can backup your game files to one large file and burn it to a DVD or CD. That way if you have to reformat you don't have to redownload everything again.

I've done this.

DivideBYZero - 1
Steam - 0

Yeah, I hated it especially since I was on dialup at the time of HL2 purchase. Add even when I reinstalled after getting broadband the downloading of all the patch files and whatnot was ridiculously long (2+ hours).

Yeah right, you'll buy Half-Life 3 when it comes out ... 😛

Well, for me, I haven't bought a Valve game since HL. HL2 was a gift from my bro-in-law to my son. heh

i downloaded steam_installcs.exe and burned it to a CD. also i have HL2 on discs. i just install steam off the disc, let it update a few times, then install HL2... i'm playing in about 45 minutes 🙂 yeah still a long time -_-
