This is a coincidence?

Actually, yes, by the looks of it, their site has existed for at least a few months.

PS I have a hard time believing this would nessisitate jail time; I just don't see it having a very large financial impact(you and I are still going to buy the game, and no reputible company would use the illegal source over that of licenced source)

Its a servere crime, its more than just hacking. It does warrant jail time, or massive fines. Since this guy cant likely pay massive fines, 5-10 hard time should do the trick.

No reputable company will rip code straight from someone elses source code, but that doesnt mean, the code cant be copied in other ways.

I doubt its a $1million, those days are long gone. Typically its $250,000-$500,000, sometimes more or less depending if the engine creator gets royalties or if the people license it decide to go a royalty free route.

Its(game development) is alot more involved than that. Just because people have the source code for HL2, doesnt mean all future games based off the HL2 engine will have cheats.

I guess the only way around this is to rewrite? I mean, what else is there? You could never get rid of the source code files now, thousands of people have it.... Damn internet...

I think this is just some intentional hype before the release. I really doubt the source code will do anything other than provoke numerous mods for the game and thus expand it's base of play.

There will still be a pirate version. There will still be many of us that buy the game. Then, there will be those that buy the game just to program for it to make their own mod.

I'm thinking this was done on purpose.

Let's see... license the code, or use the stolen version, get sued, pay legal fees, pay compensatory and punative damages, and have your company's reputation trashed.

I'd pay the license fees.

Someone allegedly compiled it and has it running with their own textures and models. It's supposed to be on Shacknews somewhere but I can't find it.

What's with the name calling? While not everyone agrees with his conclusion, some of his points are still right.

Please explain yourself why you even think he removely has a point.

For someone to even think that a company would leak what's their bread and butter to the public so that people could build mods for their game is either an idiot or just clueless to what software development is all about.

What this all comes down to is no hl2 till next year... :(

From some other problems valve was having with steam (someone faked another employees name) they got the information that hl2 was delayed because of steam. It couldn't handle the bandwidth it would require at release time. They were going to switch over to a p2p system.

Looks like they will have to recode a lot of steam now that the source for that got leaked, I would hold off going on steam till they release some patches or something. Who knows maybe the month old code is too different from the current that no one will be able to do any DDoS or other things with it...

I really hope they catch whoever leaked this. It's one thing to hack and steal files to show you did it. But why leak it out to the public like this?!?
