This is going to be the best thing since the lava lamp.

Frankly, I'd rather they'd delayed the game another month or two just to include HL2DM with the release.

But oh well. We're getting it, and that's what matters 😀

What are you, nuts!? That would mean we'd still be waiting for the game as we speak! Why not have them release the game when it's ready and not hold it back for the DM (kinda like it is now 😉 ).?

Oh, I dunno, because this screws the people on 56K?

I'm on cable myself, so I don't foresee any problems, but I do have a conscience...

How would the 56kers play online anyways?

HL1 DM was mediocre at best and so is HL2 DM. I can't quite figure out what it is that makes it so, but it's probably the speed and weapons. Player movement is sluggish, compared to better DM games(Quake series, UT series) making these smallish Maps seem huge. Also the Weapons are 2 types, the practically Useless and the Godly.

What I don't like about it:

1) The Grav Gun is good for a few chuckles, but really sucks as a DM weapon IMO. Servers should remove it if they can.

2) Weapon and Item placement is ok, but too sparse. The Prison Map has better placement/amounts, but the other Map has 1 Health pickup in the whole level which is a poor choice.

3) You can't jump for crap. Even Items that are small enough that any normal person would step over without thought are very difficult to get over even when using Jump.

4) The wost part of it is the moveable Items. They impede movement horridly. Few things suck more in DM then to be snagged by crap when you are in the middle of a firefight.

Hopefully User Made Maps will avoid these mistakes.

how do you setup a server? Painkiller had the ability built in but HL2 DM all I can do is create one but cant pick the name I want to call it or put in a password. Is there additional sofware to downlaod?

The second Tab at the top of the Server Setup Window. 😉

It's great fun.
Machine gun is great for kills, just aim for the head and keep moving.
You have to use the gav gun key a lot (switches from current wep to grav gun) so you can pick up ammo/health/weapons etc easier (rather than having to run to them), it also helps with moving pesky objects like furniture.
Always aim for the head.

Any tips on using the shotgun? I can't do much with it, even unloading 2 shells at point blank won't kill. And doing it twice sometimes doesn't kill 🙁
I did get commended for a good performance earlier though, top score on my team 🙂 I was kicking ass.

I think the grav gun is great. On the overwatch map, people go up top to where the rocket launcher is, and team members pile stuff in the stairwell with gravity guns so no one else can get up there, and then the other team has to fight their way to the top. I had a great time doing that. I agree it sucks to get stuck on something though, but that could be fixed by actually being able to jump. So yea in response
1. Keep the gravity gun!! Thats what makes HL2 special and unique.
2. Agreed, prison map is ok, but overwatch is sparse.
3. Also agreed, need to be able to jump to get over stuff.
4. Disagree. This goes right along with #1. It is fun to block doorways and stairs and whatnot with the GG.

Hmm, haven't tried Team DM and in light of your comments I can see how the GG and Objects can add to Team DM. For FFA DM though, the same things are very bad IMO, it raises "Camping" to Insane new heights! 😉

Has there been any talk about a CTF mode? that would be awesome with the grav gun. u can shoot the flag up to a balcony b4 u die so a friend can get it.

They should let you have a melee weapon. Crowbar wars!! I just got around to playing tonight, for the first time ... its tons of fun. 😀

They are working on the crowbar right now... also I think they are putting in the electric sticks the combine soldiers had.

I got a chance to play it for the first time last night. My impressions:
The magnum is crazy powerful. I found myself sniping with this and getting 1 shot kills across a map.
Its really fast paced... or, maps are too small. In a 10 player server I racked up 90 kills in 20 minutes. Half of that was throwing office furniture around 🙂
I wish they had more booby traps like the HL1DM trip mines or charges would be nice.
Shotgun needs to be more powerful close range IMO.
I wish crossbow was instantaneous like a railgun. Bolts are just too slow to use at range. Awesome gun close range unzoomed though.

I agree, people do really suck, but there are lots of good players out there. They are usually magnum whores though. Hopefully they'll add more maps soon

I'm a good player, I am usually top when I play (TDM or DM) and I don't magnum whore.
I use the MG and grav gun most of the time.
You have to be really quick switching weapons though.
And you want the crossbow to be like a railgun, why? YOu already have the magnum, you don't need another 1 hit kills weapon that's super quick.

thats what i'm saying, the magnum should not have to be the railgun in this game. They should slow it down or make it less powerful. The crossbow should be the 'sniper' weapon, like it was in the HL1. Crossbow kills at long range at moving targets are pretty satisfying though 😛
