Hittin' the treadmill

Started going to the gym again, hit the 'mill the other day for the first time in a while. According to the machine, I ran an 8 minute mile. Is that good?

Other than that, what's good for cardio?

Swimming is an incredible cardio workout. I can run 4 miles a day at a really good speed without a problem, but two laps in a pool absolutely kills me.

I find jogging outside even at night beats the treadmill hands down in terms of exercise quality. An 8 min mile is not bad.

seriously....I can excercise on the erg at full for 15, use the elliptical for 15min, lift for 30, and a few laps in the pool feels like 10x as much work

I'm getting back into erging though for the concentration...can only do about 3600m in 15min so far😱 at about 60-70% full

hoepfully I will improve drastically...can only keep me slipt at a little above 2:00 😱

Sure I can go down to 1:37 but only for 30 second bursts🙁

I suppose jogging outdoors would be good, because the terrain is uneven and continuously variable.

Depends on how far you ran. If you ran one mile, isn't that good. 2 miles, still meh. 5 Miles it's getting closer to a decent pace.

Of course, if you are a runner then even at 5 miles it sucks.

Indeed. I tried doing the treadmill the other day because it was raining outside. I ran half a mile, got off the machine, and went and ran 3.5 miles in the rain 😛

I can't stand the tredmill.

Ran three miles. But I mean, I don't usually run, I was on the track team in grade school, but only for a little while.

Background info : I have fribromyalgia, you can read about it here.

Well, if you don't usually run its a good start. 🙂

Another question; is it a bad idea to go back and do the same exercise if you're still feeling the pain from the last one? I'd like to go back, just don't want to do things wrong.

LOL same. I hit the gym before work, so it's early in the morning and when i hit the pool, i was the only one in it. But the lifeguard had to sit there and babysit me, and so she watched me TRIED To swim. I swam 2 laps, and then gave up, stumbled into the changeroom.

Perhaps if I got the pace right, I could increase my speed. As is, every minute I'd jump up .2 - .4, depending on what I felt I could take.

An 8 minute mile for 3 miles is very good for someone who is not a runner and is just starting out. Most people just starting out usually shoot for a 10 minute mile when running a 5k (which is just a bit over 3 miles).

But if I can start at an 8 minute mile, why not push it further? Gotta test your limits. 🙂

Though...I felt like throwing up afterwards, but that quickly passed. Thanks to my brother, I had my trusty-powerade with me.

Start with an 8 minute mile and run it 1.5 miles then increase by 10% or so for the second half if you feel it's too easy. Frankly, at 8 minutes you're running at a decent clip as it is, if you feel like you're about to puke, odds are that you're pushing too hard.

It's the competition. A couple other people got on the treadmill beside me in turns, I believe I out-ran 2-3 people. The last guy jumped right up to my speed and I thought he would be able to keep up that pace, I was considering giving up because I was tired, but then he started mashing the "speed down" button and I felt damn good. Competition is good.

Here's a related question: If I were to get one piece of (cardio) exercise equipment for home, what should it be? A treadmill? An elliptical?

Teadmill! 😀

Why, as opposed to an elliptical or cross-country ski thingie?

8 minute miles aren't that hard on a treadmill. Treadmills "do" the work for you - in essence they are propelling you. Unless you adjust the treadmill to a significant incline - it's not as hard as running the same amount outside or even on a track. But treadmills can be good for training if you are just starting out. Increase the incline over time the more you work out and as the weeks go by.

You should wait until the soreness is gone, let your muscles rebuild right now.

You can take sport drinks like Endurox and supplements like L-Glutamine, if you want to recover faster, both are natural and have no side affects. Read about it more if you want.

Anyways, good luck, and enjoy.

I love the gym and look forward to going every time 🙂

Feel the motivation!
