Phelps did the smart thing and went public and admitted it and issued a public apology and now will all be forgiven. Roger Clemens should have been as smart.

However, unlike Clemens, I don't think he should have to apologize. He's apologizing for acting like a normal 23 year old. He's apologizing for utilizing the perks that the shitload of work and his regimented lifestyle got him. I'd rather Phelps issue a statement of not-sorry.

The American fixation on the demonization of marijuana is ridiculous.

It has nothing to do with that. It's illegal. And it's against IOC rules. It should be legal, but its not. So you have to play by the rules.

As government governs only by the consent of the governed, bad laws cannot be changed and injustice cannot be righted if the people consent to "playing by the rules" even as they know certain rules are wrong.

 and so what if he smoked some weed. Dude's 23 and rich. Let him live his life the way he wants to

you know what, if a ton of celebrity and , more importantly , "role model" figures stepped up and exposed their pot smoking in public... that would help shatter the demonized image of weed

He's only sorry that he got caught. I find it kind of annoying that grown adults (who have won multiple gold medals for their countries) have to apologize for having some fun.

wow. pot is not a performance enhancing drug, they should let it go. hell pot will make you underperform.

they did let it go

AUSANNE, Switzerland -- The International Olympic Committee expressed confidence Monday that Michael Phelps will learn from his "inappropriate behavior" and continue to serve as a role model after a British newspaper published a photo of him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at last year's Beijing Olympics, apologized and acknowledged "regrettable behavior" after the picture was published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.

"Michael Phelps is a great Olympic champion," the IOC said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press on Monday. "He apologized for his inappropriate behavior. We have no reason to doubt his sincerity and his commitment to continue to act as a role model."

During the Beijing Olympics, IOC president Jacques Rogge called Phelps "the icon of the games."

Marijuana is viewed differently from performance-enhancing drugs under World Anti-Doping Agency rules. An athlete is subject to WADA sanctions only for a positive test that occurs during competition periods.

The News of the World said the picture was taken during a November house party while Phelps was visiting the University of South Carolina.

The party occurred nearly three months after the Olympics while Phelps was taking a long break from training, and his actions should have no impact on the medals he won in. Beijing.

He has never tested positive for banned substances and the case is unlikely to fall under any doping rules.
