"what if your name was hitler?" hmm... assuming you don't marry someone named hitler, you won't become a hitler yourself. and let's also consider the males who responded to this question saying they wouldn't change their name: first of all, your name won't be hitler, ever. and you'll never change your name to hitler, because that is just ridiculous beyond the point of discussing further. but to say that if your name was hitler, which isn't exactly a common name, that you wouldn't change it? michael bolton is a little more common and benign than the single worst person of the 20th century, and you would chose to be associated with him in any way? sometimes i think people take this devil's advocacy thing a little beyond reason :disgust:
No one who said they wouldn't change their name is playing devil's advocate. They simply think (and I agree with them) that what one bad person did decades ago... should have no effect on the way another person lives their life (least of all their name). It's silly and petty if it upsets people to hear that someone is named Hitler.

no, it's unbelievably insensitive and stupid. apparently you're lucky enough to not have been personally affected by hitler, but my grandmother's and grandfather's entire families were killed. brothers, sisters, parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents. everyone. because a guy named hitler ordrered it. and it would be "silly" if my grandma met someone named hitler who didn't care what people thought of him? in about 50 years, when it's virtually guaranteed that anyone who survived world war 2 and was in europe has died, then yes, the name hitler can be brought back without too much controversy. but for now... i could not imagine someone who would want to be associated with hitler in any easily changeable way.

It's not like someone named Hitler would automatically dress like him and try to emulate him. It's just a Fing name

Do you also feel that all the bin ladens of the world should change their names, just because they might upset someone? At what point in time would it be okay to start being a bin laden again? I think you're being silly.

lol. this isn't even a rational discussion anymore, you're trying to justify keeping hitler as a name. so fine, if you want to name your kid "hitler stalin pinochet osama lirion" just to prove a point that nothing's in a name, go ahead.

I dunno what to say dolph, don't take it personally, but you lose.

*edit* I think the main problem you have with the opposing argument is that you are looking at it in the wrong way. As illustrated by your post above, you seem to think that we are discussing people who want to name their children Hitler (or Osama... reminding me of the German couple recently). I was mainly talking about people who are alive who are named Hitler, etc. Whether they are related to him, or unrelated, it's a NAME. So what if they have the same name as an bad person? Why should someone hold all the rights to a name, as you would like to see happen, just because they did terrible things. It's not the fault of the person who is also named Hitler, etc. it is the fault of the silly, petty person who automatically associates anyone with a similar name to someone who supports the acts of the bad person. However, even in the case of the people who are not currently named Hitler, etc. but want to name their children Hitler, etc. it is inconsequential. Is it insensitive and in bad taste? Yes, but who cares? You actually think these people changing their names will bring back your dead family? No of course not. Will it have any effect on anything or anyone, anywhere? No, only on people who have a stick up their ass and can't deal with reality. It's just a name, grow up.

Now you're being ridiculous and putting words in my mouth. I said if I were named Hitler I would not change my name to appease someone else. I never said I would name my children after him to get a rise out of someone. No one should carry the weight of my crimes. I will not carry anyone else's.

I asked you a question. You could answer it, instead of trying to twist my words around to make yourself feel better. Should anyone who shares a surname with someone infamous change their name to appease others, and for how long should that name be taboo?

But if you feel more comfortable thinking that I go around wearing a swastika, and gassing every Jew I meet, fine, I don't care anyway.

lirion & ollie:

ok, you win. hitler should ellicit no different a response or emotion than jones or smith. and if there was ever a textbook example of the famous quote, this thread has been it. and i feel just as dumb for being dragged into it.

"winning an arugment on the internet is a lot like winning the special olympics. either way, you're still retarded."

Hey, leave me out of this. Jones has a bad enough name, it doesn't need to be included with the likes of Hilter. 😉

Hmm . . .

"This is a very nice resume, Mr. . . . Hitler?"
"Yes, that's right. Bob Hitler."
"I seeeeeeee. Hmm. It says here you enjoy working with others, is that correct?"
"Yes, that's right, I'm definitely a people person."
"Riiiiiight. Well, I'll definitely consider your application; we'll get back to you."
