Uh, you're crazy to pay $500 deductive and get your insurance rate increased. Bumper cover costs less than that. Paint will be a bit extra. Get a total quote for the repairs, that trunk may be more expensive though.

Call and ask first if anything will happen to your premium if you file a comprehensive claim.

But the first thing you really should have done, which I assume you already did, is file a police report of the hit and run, and ask them to investigate.

LOL $3500 damage there at least.

More damage than when I was rear ended in my '08 CTS and that was $4500 to repair. That will also show up as body repair or whatever it's called on a Carfax report. In Georgia, you could actually get diminished value on the car for that level of damage. I was got about $2500 additional.

Wow!

Thanks to those standing up for me. I guess some people just assume money comes to you for doing nothing and that anything bad is well deserved. But I'm just a middle aged working Joe (gov't job) paying child support to an evil ex-wife as well as alimony. Sometimes you just want to treat yourself to a present after a bad experience (eg divorce).

Anyway, I don't think I can get diminished value bc there is no one to get it from. I was thinking about the staking out the garbage truck company but doubt I would be able to find the culprit bc its one of those front loading garbage trucks that probably had a dumpster attached to it.

I'm just going to have to live with it and pay up. I believe in karma so what comes around goes around. If the driver of the truck is living his life that way, it will catch up to him.

Believe it or not, but diminished value can come from your own insurance company if you file a claim. Though Georgia is one of the few states in the union where it's possible to collect.

And I know what you mean about the divorce. I just treated myself to a gun and a shovel. Never got to use it though.

Yeah....my mom's car just got smashed. It even bent the axles on both the front and rear. She parked it on the street in the morning. She heard a big crash. Ran outside, saw her van whole driver side (bumper to bumper) was smashed in. She saw the car about to speed away, but some dude coming the opposite direction turned his car so he could block her in. After everything was done....she finds out the kicker....the lady has no insurance. Unfortunately, my mom cheaped out on insurance. No uninsured motorist protection. it means she now owes the 1k deductible and the insurance company is going to do all it can to not total it. They did the initial damage assesment....it came to around 6.8K. She brought it to the body shop, there first thought, "There is no way that is only 6.8K worth of damage".

If your actual bumper is not damaged (and that does not look damaged), most bumper covers (the entire plastic piece you see with dents in it) are not more than $300-$500. Painting it will costs $300 or so at most.

But the trunk is damaged too.

$500 deductible + how much increase per year? It could be more costly in a year's increase in premium than to pay out of pocket. It comes down to the numbers and what the insurance and the shop gives as estimates.

Gonna be more than 500 for the bumper alone, the one on my S4 is $700 from the dealer.

Your rates don't increase for comprehensive claims like this.

LOL, yeah, just get a new bumper cover and trunk lid and install yourself! I'm sure it'll buff right out.

Seriously though that sucks ass, unfortunately I'm not sure what you can do. If the trucking company is denying everything and you don't even know which of their employees did it, you can't really do much, can you? Since you do have that witness would it help? Or is it not worth it compared to just filing a claim with your own insurance?

Wow! There a lot of irresponsible hit and runners out there. At least I'm not alone.

The auto body guy said business has been pretty slow bc people just aren't repairing their cars after accidents.

How do you get rear ended in your own driveway ? ? ? What kind of wacky drivers are in your area ? ? As to comprehensive, I don't think that will cover damage from a hit & run. It would most likely be under your collision or maybe uninsured motorists coverage.
Info below from here:
http://www.carinsurancerates.com/news/302-hit-and-run-claims.html
Hit and Run Claims

After spending the last hour in the grocery store, you push your cart out of the store and head towards your car. Suddenly, you notice a cargo van quickly backing up and heading straight for the front of your car. You yell for the driver to stop, but it’s too late.
The front of your car is now a crumpled mess. To make matters worse, the driver of the cargo van isn’t stopping. He’s turning the wheel and putting the van into drive. You quickly grab a pen and scribble the license plate number onto the palm of your hand. Next, you call the police.
While you’re waiting for the police to arrive, you locate two other people who witnessed the hit-and-run. They are both in a hurry, but provide you with their name and phone number so your insurance company can contact them and obtain their statements.
After filing the police report, you go home and put your groceries away. Then you call your insurance carrier, or visit their website to file your claim. But, before you file the claim you need to make certain you have the proper coverage.
If you don’t carry full coverage on your vehicle, chances are you aren’t covered for a hit-and-run accident. This doesn’t mean you can’t file a claim with the hit-and-run driver’s insurance company — if he’s insured.
To do this, you will need to file a police report and provide the authorities with the license plate number. You’ll also want to provide the names and contact information for those who witnessed the hit-and-run incident.
The police should be able to track the vehicle from the license plate number. Only then will you be able to determine if the driver has insurance or not. If he does not have insurance coverage and you do not have uninsured motorist coverage, the only recourse left is to file a complaint with your state’s District Attorney’s office. You will be required to provide proof of damages and a police report to initiate a restitution order against the driver.
If you are able to obtain the hit-and-run driver’s contact information, you can file a lawsuit against him in Small Claims Court.
If you have uninsured motorist coverage, it’s best to work with your own insurance carrier. They will work as your personal advocate and take the necessary steps to recover expenses from the hit-and-run driver or through his insurance company.
It’s important to remember that when you use your own insurance company to file a hit-and-run claim, you will be responsible to cover the deductible amount. Should you or your insurance company be able to recover expenses from the hit-and-run driver, you will be reimbursed for your deductible.
If you are unable to obtain the license plate number of the hit-and-run driver and you do not have full coverage or uninsured motorist insurance, you are basically out of luck. There is nothing for you to fall back on and you will have to pay for the damages to your vehicle out of your own pocket.
If you are unable to obtain the license plate number of the hit-and-run driver, and do have full coverage and uninsured motorist insurance, you will be able to file a hit-and-run claim. However, you will not be able to recoup the cost of your deduction.

I would have bought a house with a garage before buying that car, to avoid that very issue.

This will really drive up the cost of your repair. My car suffered very similar damage to yours. I would say mine was a little worse, but it also needed a new bumper assembly, cover, tail light, trunk lid, and trunk straightened, and paint of course. The insurance paid me ~$6,000! I got it all fixed for $5,000.

except now your car is worth less on resale.

Accidents suck.

OP why post such a large pic though?

Get pictures, witnesses, info, and sue sue sue! You may not get anything from her but you can at least make her life miserable. I would have some leniency even if she didn't have insurance (very little leniency, but some at least). But trying to get away automatically puts you in a position where mercy isn't something you deserve.

Went to an autobody place today.

He estimates it's around $2500-$3000 in damage.
Not surprised at all. Like I said, $900 for a maxima bumper and you have bumper plus hood plus light plus something on front? Doesn't sound high at all.

That's gonna be way more than $3000.

The initial estimate for my car was $1850 or something like that for a new Bumper + Paint & misc trim parts.

When all said and done the total insurance paid out $3400.

Hope they find the person who did this!
