ST. LOUIS (AP) - At least four students from a suburban St. Louis middle school face punishment for allegedly hitting Jewish classmates during what they called "Hit a Jew Day."

The incident happened last week at Parkway West Middle School in Chesterfield.

District officials said Thursday they believe that fewer than 10 children of the district's 35 Jewish students were struck.

District spokesman Paul Tandy said that in most cases, the students were hit on the back of their shoulders but one student was slapped in the face.

It began with an unofficial "Spirit Week" among sixth-graders that started harmlessly enough with a "Hug a Friend Day." Then there was "High Five Day."

Soon, though, the days moved from friendly to silly. Next there was "Hit a Tall Person Day" and, finally, "Hit a Jew Day."

District officials believe a handful of children were directly involved. Those who actually struck classmates could face suspension and required counseling, Tandy said. Others who weren't directly involved but taunted Jewish students or egged on classmates could face lesser penalties.

"There is a mix of sadness and outrage," Tandy said. "The concern is a lot of kids knew about it and they didn't take action or say anything."

Karen Aroesty, St. Louis regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, said this was more than a case of bullying. Officials from the group will meet Friday with district leaders to discuss the matter.

Not sure if I'm more shocked by the stupidity of these kids or the fact that there are only 35 Jewish kids total in their district. I grew up in predominately Jewish areas so that number sounds shockingly low.

On another note, had I known earlier, I would have beat myself silly today.

Middle Schools kids are still pretty young and impressionable. Think this is a product of their parents raising or just kids being kids?

You do realize that only 2% of the U.S. population is Jewish right? (That fact is used as leverage by anti-semites.)

Anyway, it's hard to know if this is just kids being kids or not. Could be that or the fact that most people (including Jews) are prejudiced against people that are different from them.

Yes, but I guess we do tend to congregate in certain areas and I lived in both very large pockets all my life (NJ/NY and South Florida). My high school had 4500 students, of which I would gather 500-700 were Jewish.

Surely you can see the difference between kids that are making fun of someone's religious persuasion and kids that are making fun of race.

slap a Jew day, shortly followed by "kick a Muslim" day, which is just before "starve a Buddhist" day and every other Tuesday is "spit on a Christian" day. Bahai get to celebrate all of those days.

I don't know, I went to a high school where people had to be of a minimum 130 IQ and we all made fun of each other's religions simply to be ironic.

But then I don't believe that 'jew' is a race any more than I believe 'Italian' is a race.

I'm kind of surprised that middle school kids in St. Louis even knew Jews existed, let alone were able to figure out which kids were Jews. That being said, these kids need to spend some time in detention, being bored to tears watching godawful videos on tolerance and respect and writing essays on their own stupidity and jerkness. There is no excuse for this kind of crap.

"Hit a Tall Person Day" That didn't work out well in my H.S. It was quickly retitled " Get K.O.'d or choked out by a tall person day"

Maybe we should blame south park? Hell, it is always popular to give bad parenting a free pass and blame T.V. or vid games, etc. Cartman is always Jew hating, that is where the inspiration doubtless came from. ;)

Would there be any of this wishy washy benefit of doubt if it was "stomp the gay" day or "beat the n***er" day? It was a CRIME (and the kids should be charged) that would have brought protesting and potential rioting if it had been anything other "group" than Jewish.

Doesnt matter if they are kids IMHO. They get it from somewhere... hello mom and dad?

With the sinking economy and people like Ben Shalom Bernanke at the front lines, people are returning to the age old practice of antisemitism (not that I condone this - simply stating fact). I imagine these kids overheard their parents or have been reading online, as anti-Jew sentiment is uncommon at that age.

I think a "hit a n!gger day" would fall in the same category as "hit a tall guy day". You would get your shit handed to you ...

Hit a tall guy day is ok, but hit a jew isnt?
