poop, what is real music?
music is music, and everyone has their own taste.
To me, the best type of music is hitting notes with your voice. Quartet style, the rawest form of vocal music. 1st tenor, 2nd tenor, baritone, bass. No instruments, just clear voices hitting notes.
Some people like instruments with singing... some like only synthesized music.
music is so diverse which makes it great. There can be no debate on which one is better, cause they all have their different pluses and minuses.
I love all types of different music, cause each in itself has its good points.
But in the end, I think I'd prefer Charlotte Church over Old Dirty Bastard.

I remember awhile back someone posted a link to the "pop intelligence test" or something like that. Basically it was this guy who analyzed the lyrics of popular pop groups and deducted points for each time certain words (like love, baby, etc..) were used. I can't remember who "won", but I'll see if I can do some digging in the archives and find it again.

Interesting question about 'what is music'.
For me at least, music is something to stir the listener. Something that the listener enjoys listening to for the warm shuddery feeling that you get when you're connected to what you are listening to at a fundamental level. Any music with a touch of heart to it, anything emotive, anything written for that reason alone gets to me every time. A wide range of music does this to me .. Level 42, Chicane, Delerium, U2, Nirvana, pure vocal or orchestral, some musical tracks, such as Les Mis., well ... pretty much anything that does the above. And it seems most genres have songs that can push your buttons.
Sadly, the signal to noise ratio seems to be deteriorating.
The entire pop culture... buying music based on thinking the artist is good looking, buying music because your friends are. Buying music to keep up. Buying music to look like something you're not. Buying music out of sheer ennui. All directed by the RIAA and organisations like it, focused solely on profit (any real musical merit seems accidental, or in those rare exceptions where a fan base has built soley on the merit of the artists.. I'm not discounting that, just commenting on the pop culture in general). Anyone fitting into the above category has to run through this corporate machine first, and it's sickening.
I'm waiting for the death of the music industry so maybe we can have the 'music' part back.

Do I have to say this again? No, they don't. You think so, because you don't like it. I think the same thing about all old rock/alternative. But I do KNOW that it's not, but it sounds it to me. If you gave me an intrumental version of a new song from one of those three, one that I'd never heard of, I would be able to tell you who it's by, from the style.

They have two...All My Life and Tell Me It's Real...that brings up something, noone makes fun of R&B artists like them, but all R&B is is pop with more bass and black singers. There is seriously no real difference. First time I heard Brian McKnight, I thought he was a white pop artist. Guess what, he's black R&B. The styles are the same, yet R&B is held in so much higher regard to people who don't like either.

I'll just listen to my old U2, Sting, Phil Collins, Match box, savage gardens, oldies, Pop, Trans, Techno, hip hop, rock etc bands/artists. 🙂
Don't like boy bands that much. They're all sound the same (for some reason, they use the word "baby" too often, and all the songs are about the same thing).

Yes, it does happen. Beatles, Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Rage against the Machine did for me. And something that separates them from your little boys is (talent) that they didn't have specials on TV (talent), they didn't do Burger King commercials(talent), they don't have there own clothing brands (talent).
And they did it for the Music. Yes, it does happen and when you are finally old enough maybe you will go to a bar and hear music from people who love it. All the fireworks and little pretty dance steps are nothing compared to a smoky little bar with maybe 20 to 30 people all enjoying the music first hand. But maybe I am spoiled because I live in Seattle and the music culture hear is so rich. In fact last night I went to Cornish College of the Arts (one of the best in the country) to see a choir perform. And anyone of those men could sing laps around your boy toys.
This whole tread is just an exercise in futility. Soon they little ones will grow up and deny that they ever listened to them in the first place.

Yes, Michael Jordan sucks while John Stockton rules all because Jordan does commercials and has his own shoe brand, perfume, golf club, sex position, etc.

Pop DOES NOT have to be people dancing around singing high notes. Pop music is POPULAR music. It can be anything from rock to boybands as long as its popular.
